Beloved of my soul, O my soul and my very self,

Longing would sweep me away, were it not for my consolations.

These years have followed one another since our parting,

And I have nothing but the heat of my sighs.

O Egypt, O focus of art's devotion, blessed

By the Almighty's spirit with sign upon sign.

You are indeed history's enchantress; since first they came into being,

The secrets of your beauty have coursed through the waterfalls.

Glory to my Lord! How many blessings He has bestowed on you!

    Their lights sparkle like galaxies.

    أَوْ قِيلَ فَنٌّ فَأَنْتِ الأَمْس وَالآتِي

    If learning is spoken of, you excel—you are learning itself;

Or if art is named, you are yesterday and what is to come.

How many wonders you have recounted of the pyramids,

And how high you have risen with Amun and Nafrat!

For every handspan of your land is a glorious legacy,

And in your waters are the breaths of prophecy.

So whoever visits you remains forever dazzled

By a miraculous past or a present yet to come.

O Egypt, O goal of seekers, O banner

That, when it flutters, is the loftiest among banners.

God bless you—you are civilizations made immortal,

O you who have prevailed over all the coquettes,

In coquetry, form, and beauty, uniquely endowed

With its enchantment among all the people of the earth.

Like a fragment of the full moon, or like the sun, when she glides by,

Radiance flutters among the fringes of the folds.

As though light were only part of her charms,

And all of them lie hidden in the particles.

O Egypt, you have exhausted my powers of description; here is my pen,

Shattered—how often it speaks in veiled allusions!

So can my allusions reach far, though they have fallen short

Of the marvel of art in the past and in the future?

This is God's sign, defying description; no wonder

If it has defeated my letters in my brightest verses.

Accept, Egypt, my heart through my rhyme,

For it is love, shimmering in my mirror.

And it is sincerity in my soul and in my words,

Nay, in the innermost folds of my capillaries.

And I do not compose it as falsehood or mere words,

For it is pure, refined; indeed, it is my very self.
