I swear by God, mighty and exalted,

indeed, my heart has never ceased to love her.

She is my very soul—yet the expression does her no justice;

no, she is dearer than my soul and more precious.

هي عندي دنيا من الحسن طابت

وزكت نبتة وفرعا وأصلا

وزكت نبتة وفرعا وأصلا

To me she is a world of beauty, lovely

and flourishing in shoot and branch and root.

حاش لله ليس حبك يلقى

حاش لله ليس حبك يلقى

غير قلبي له مكانا وأهلا

غير قلبي له مكانا وأهلا

God forbid! Love for you finds

no home or kin for itself but my heart.

قسما بالذي براك من السِّحْـ

قسما بالذي براك من السِّحْـ

ـرِ ومَنْ صوَّر الجمال فأعلى

ـرِ ومَنْ صوَّر الجمال فأعلى

I swear by Him who fashioned you from enchantment,

and by Him who shaped beauty and raised it high,

والذي نوّر الجبين فكانت

والذي نوّر الجبين فكانت

طلعة كالصباح يمنا ونبلا

طلعة كالصباح يمنا ونبلا

and by Him who illumined your brow, so it became

a countenance like morning in blessing and nobility.

أنا أهواك فوق ما عرف الحبْ

ـبُ كأنا في الحب قيس وليلى

ـبُ كأنا في الحب قيس وليلى

I love you beyond all that love has known,

as though we were, in love, Qays and Layla.

ليتني متّ في هواك فما أكـ

ـرم في حبك الممات وأحلى!

ـرم في حبك الممات وأحلى!

Would that I had died for love of you—for how noble

and sweet is death for love of you!

إيه بغداد يا عروس الليالي

فقت في العز بدرها إذ تجلّى

فقت في العز بدرها إذ تجلّى

Ah, Baghdad, O bride of the nights,

you surpassed their full moon in glory when it shone forth.

وبدنيا الأمجاد كان لك السبـ

وبدنيا الأمجاد كان لك السبـ

ـق تباعا والقِدْح فيها الْمُعَلَّى

ـق تباعا والقِدْح فيها الْمُعَلَّى

And in the world of glories, yours was precedence

time after time, and there yours was the highest-valued arrow.
