أفادِني وُدَّكَ بَعْدَ كَدِّ

أفادِني وُدَّكَ بَعْدَ كَدِّ

دَهْرٌ نَحانِي صَرْفُهُ بِقَصْدِ

دَهْرٌ نَحانِي صَرْفُهُ بِقَصْدِ

Your affection was granted to me after toil

Your friendship has helped me after hardship

by Time, whose vicissitudes deliberately targeted me,

Time's vicissitudes have exhausted me intentionally

يَطْلُبُ نَفْسِي ثائِراً عَنْ عَمْدِ

يَطْلُبُ نَفْسِي ثائِراً عَنْ عَمْدِ

فَصِرْتُ إذ أَصْفَيْتَنِي بُوِدِّ

فَصِرْتُ إذ أَصْفَيْتَنِي بُوِدِّ

seeking my life as an avenger, with deliberate intent.

My soul turbulent seeks on purpose

So I became, when you singled me out with affection,

So I when you purified me with love

عُذْرُ إساءَاتِ الزَّمانِ عِنْدِي

عُذْرُ إساءَاتِ الزَّمانِ عِنْدِي

وَهيَ كَثِيراتٌ تَفُوتُ عَدِّي

وَهيَ كَثِيراتٌ تَفُوتُ عَدِّي

an excuse for Time’s wrongs, in my eyes.

The excuse of time's wrongs is valid for me

And they are many, beyond my counting.

And they are many, beyond my count

قَدْ يَغْلُظُ الْحَتْرُ بِوَقْتِ سَعْدِ

قَدْ يَغْلُظُ الْحَتْرُ بِوَقْتِ سَعْدِ

وَيَقْدَحُ الْقُرْبُ بِزَنْدِ البُعْدِ

وَيَقْدَحُ الْقُرْبُ بِزَنْدِ البُعْدِ

A meager gift may grow substantial in a time of good fortune,

Familiarity at times of ease may be harsh

and nearness strikes sparks with separation’s fire-stick.

And nearness may spark with flint of distance

فَاجَي إِلى الْوَصْلِ ثَقِيلُ الصَّدِّ

فَاجَي إِلى الْوَصْلِ ثَقِيلُ الصَّدِّ

So come to union, heavily saddened
