مَاwhat بَالُthe matter with إِحْسَانِيmy kindness أَصْحَبْتُهُI took it along
خَلَلَamong الرِّجالِmen يَصِيرُit becomes مِثْلَlike إساءَتِيmy ill-treatment
Why does my kindness, which I took along
Why is my kindness to him
Among men, become like my ill-treatment?
Among men becomes like my wrongdoing?
ماnever إنْemphasis of negation كَفَفْتُI restrained أَذيَّةًharm إلاَّexcept that هَوْتَit plunged
نَحْوِيtoward me بِكَفِّby the hand of تَجاوُزِيmy forgiveness وَأَنَاتِيand my patience
Never have I restrained harm without its plunging
No sooner do I restrain harm
Toward me by the hand of my forgiveness and patience.
Than he comes at me with blows despite my tolerance and patience.
فَلِذاكَso, for that reason أَصْبِرُI am patient عَافٍforgiving عاقِلٍsensible
وَأُهَتِّكُand I rend الْمَذْعُورَthe terror-stricken one فِيin وَثَباتِيmy leaps
Thus I am patient, forgiving, and sensible,
Therefore I am forbearing, wise, and composed
And I rend the terror-stricken in my leaps.
Though I burst the rash in their onset.
فَإِذاso when غَفَلْتُI was heedless عَنِof الْكَفُورthe ungrateful one فإِنَّماthen merely
I give as a gift إِلَيْهِto him الْحَتْفَdeath مِنْfrom غَفَلاتيmy moments of heedlessness
So when I am heedless of the ingrate, I merely
So when I neglect the ungrateful one, in truth
Present him with death through my moments of heedlessness.
I only give him destruction through my heedlessness.
