May rain bless pleasures and delight,

    from youth to gray hair,

    and an unveiled glance

that draws the innocent near the suspect,

    مَرْبُوبَةٍ بِيَدِ الرَّبِيبِ

    tethered by passion's hand,

    nurtured by the fosterling's hand;

when my hand wrestled with time,

and when I drank in defiance of the watcher,

with steeds of revelry that let fall

the unseen's train in torrents over him.

They galloped with us, their watchword:

    No authority but the beloved's.

A longing that runs riot in pres-

ence—how, then, does it act in absence?
