طَرِبْتُI felt longing إلىfor عَمّيmy paternal uncle وعاوَدَنِيand returned to me ذِكْرِيmy recollection
وَقَسَّمَand divided شَوَّالٌShawwal بِقَدْمَتِهِwith its arrival فِكْرِيmy thoughts
I was stirred with longing for my uncle, and my memories returned to me;
I yearned for my uncle, and memories of him returned to me,
And Shawwal's arrival divided my thoughts.
While the month of Shawwal divided my thoughts with its steps.
فَكَمْand how many فَتْكَةٍa bold foray لِيmine فِيin ذُرَىthe heights of عَرَصَاتِهاits courtyards
أَرُوحُI go at evening عَلىin سُكْرٍdrunkenness وأَغْدُوand I go at morning عَلَىin سُكْرٍdrunkenness
And how many a bold foray was mine in the heights of its courtyards!
How violent are the blows to me in the plains of its meadows!
I would go out drunk in the evening and set out drunk in the morning.
I go intoxicated in the eve and awaken intoxicated in the morn.
طَرَقْتُI visited by night بِهَاin it الْخَمَّارَthe wine seller والنَّجْمُand the star طالِعٌrising
طُلُوعَthe rising of سِنانٍa spearhead قَاصِدٍaiming at ثَغْرَةthe hollow of النَّحْرِthe throat
There I called on the wine seller by night, as the star rose,
I roamed them with the wine-pourer while the star was rising—
Rising like a spearhead aimed at the hollow of the throat.
The emergence of a sharp sword aiming at the throat.
فأَنْكَحَنِيso he married me to خَمْراًwine رَضِيتُI accepted نِكاحَهاmarriage to her
وأَغْلَيْتُand I raised the price بِالسَّوْمِby bidding المُبالِغَextravagant وَالمَهْرِand the dowry
So he wed me to wine whose marriage I gladly accepted,
It wed me to a wine I accepted its marriage,
And I drove the price high with extravagant bidding and dowry.
And I was infatuated with exaggeration and a high dowry.
وَقُلْتُand I said لِساقِيناto our cupbearer أَدِرْpass round لِيَfor me خَمْرَةًwine
تُنِيلُgrants المُنىwishes وافْجُرْand make break forth بِطَلْعَتِهاwith its appearance فَجْرِيmy dawn
And I said to our cupbearer, 'Pour me wine
So I said to our pourer, “Pass me a wine
That grants wishes, and let its appearance usher in my dawn.'
That will grant wishes and burst forth with my vigor.”
فَقامَthen he rose خَلُوبُbeguiling الدَّلِّcoquetry يَجْلُوdisplays سُلاَفَةًchoice wine
تُشَبِّهُresembles فِيin كَاساتِهَاits cups ذائِبَmolten التِّبْرِraw gold
Then he rose, beguiling in his coyness, displaying choice wine
The tender-armed pourer rose to strain a draft
That resembles molten gold in its cups.
That resembles in its cups a melting ingot.
كَأَنَّas though أَبارِيقَewers اللُّجَيْنِsilver إذاwhen انْحَنَتْthey tilted
رِقابُnecks غرَانِيقٍcranes تَطَلَّعُpeering out مِنْfrom وَكْرِa nest
It was as though the silver ewers, when they tilted,
It was as though, when the flasks leaned aslant,
Were cranes' necks peering out from a nest.
The necks of cranes were peering out of a lair.
لَهُhe has مُقْلَةٌan eye تَسْبِيtakes captive الْعُقُولَminds وَفِتْنَةٌand an allure
تُسَقِّطُنِيmakes me fall مِنْfrom حَيْثُwhere أَدْرِيI know وَلاَand not أَدْرِيI know
He has an eye that takes minds captive, and an allure
It has a magic that steals minds and an enchantment
That brings me down in ways I know and ways I do not.
That topples me from where I know and know not.
عَليِمٌwell-versed بِوَحْيِin the secret signals of الطَّرْفِthe eye حَتَّىso that كَأنَّماas though
يُخاطِبُهُspeaks to him فِكْرِيmy thought بِماof what ضَمَّهُheld it within صَدْرِيmy breast
He is so versed in the eye's secret signals that it is as though
Knowing through a wink, as though
My thought speaks to him of what my breast holds.
My thoughts were addressing it with what my breast contained.
فَحَطَّso he set down عَلَىat حُكْمِيmy bidding رِحالَthe baggage of إِجابَةٍassent
وَسارand he proceeded بِماwith what أَهْواهُI desire it طَوْعاًwillingly إلَىtoward أَمْرِيmy command
So he set down the baggage of assent at my bidding,
It alighted in response to my command,
And willingly proceeded as I desired, in obedience to my command.
And freely went where I desired, obedient to my affair.
فَياand O لَيْلَةًa night قَدْindeed أَسْعَفَتْنِيfavored me بِطِيبِهاwith its sweetness
وَقَفْتُI dedicated عَلَيْهاto it الدَّهْرَfor all time أَلْسِنَةَtongues الشُّكْرِof gratitude
And oh, what a night that favored me with its sweetness!
O night that succored me with its goodness!
I dedicated to it, for all time, the tongues of gratitude.
I will thank it forever with my tongue.
