    Parting has renewed sorrows,

    and loss has seared hearts.

Fate has set Baghdad far away,

    bringing harm and calamity.

    عَلَّمُوا قَلْبِي الْوَجِيبا

    Some people brought about the parting;

they taught my heart to throb.

How my soul mourns a time

that was fresh and dewy for me.

My Lord, avenge me on an envier

    who hid the hand-reared gazelle.

    That is why sleep in

my eye has become a stranger.

So I would welcome, with the

sight of him, estrangement and a watcher.

O my two dear friends—and is

anyone seen as a friend today?

    Spare me reproach,

    by Him who pardons sins.

    And wine, a molten sun,

    combined beauty and fragrance.

    Night heightened its radiance,

    in glitter and flame.

    It stole my reason stealthily,

    and crept softly through me.

    It laughed unwillingly when mixed,

and the mixing banished its frown.

It scattered over the wine pearly

    necklines, as it befriended it.

A gazelle has served it to me,

one who knows the faults in me.

    A glance confirmed suspicion—

from him, my friends, a disquieting one.

And you see the bough, compared to his two flanks,

as a kinsman whenever he sways.

How many wars I have borne,

    and calamities I have surmounted!

And my foes found my remoteness

    near, thanks to my tact.

So leave off blame: my abode is no

fertile ground for one who blames.
