A day came with steady, abundant rain,

Revealing what lay hidden among the gardens' growth.

And the hand of dew had clothed the earth's face

In robes of flowers, of silver and gold.

And a river—its current cleft the gardens—

Gushes forth, recalling for us the rending born of rapture.

You see it gliding like a serpent, reluctantly,

For fear of a relentless pursuer who catches what he seeks.

And a benefactor heightened my rapture,

Whose favor is near me, whose anger far away.

He passes round wine that gleamed in his cup,

And, as he mixed it, was crowned with gold.

Every joy in him springs from his perfection,

And every beauty traces its lineage to him.

    وَإِنْ قَصَدْتُ النُّسْكَ فالسَّيْرُ خَبَبْ

    My striving gallops if I seek a reckless deed;

But if I seek devotion, the pace is a trot.
