وقَالُواand they said اصْطَبِرْbe patient فَالصَّبْرُyet patience شَيْءٌa thing عَدِمْتُهُI have lost it
لِفَقْدِيbecause of my loss of صَفْوَthe sweetness of الْعَيْشِlife مِنْfrom مُنْيَةِthe cherished desire of النَّفْسِthe soul
And they said, “Be patient”; yet patience is something I have lost,
They said: "Be patient", but patience is something I lack
For I have lost life's sweetness, which came from my soul's desire.
For the loss of the essence of life from the death of the soul
عَدِمْتُI lost الكَرَىsleep لَمَّاwhen عَدِمْتُI lost بَدائِعاًmarvels
جَعَلْنَthey made قِرَىa hospitable feast for نَفْسِيmy soul بِحَلْقِكِthrough your throat وَالْجَسِّand touch
I lost sleep when I lost those marvels
I lost all purpose when I lost your wonders
That offered my soul a feast through your throat and touch,
That made my soul dwell in your throat and body
أَرَقُّmore delicate مِنَthan الشَّكْوَىlament وَأَحْلَىand sweeter مِنَthan المُنَىwishes
وَأَرْوَحُand more soothing مِنْthan أَمْنsafety وَأَلْطَفُand subtler مِنْthan حِسِّsensation
More delicate than lament, and sweeter than wishes,
I'm more wakeful than complaint and sweeter than death
And more soothing than safety, and subtler than sensation.
And lighter than safety and gentler than feeling
لَعَمْرِيby my life لَئِنْthough indeed أَصْبَحْتِyou became in the morning سَعْدِيmy good fortune وَفِيكِand in you لِيfor me
رَجاءٌhope لَقَدْsurely أَمْسَيْتyou became in the evening بِاليَأْسِthrough despair لِيfor me نَحْسِيmy ill fortune
By my life, though you were my good fortune in the morning, and in you I had
By my life! If you were my happiness in the morning and hope was in you for me
Hope, by evening you had surely become my ill fortune through despair.
By nightfall I'm in utter despair and misfortune
فَلَوْso if كَانَwere to يَفْدِيransom الْمَيْتَthe dead حَيٌّa living person فَدَيْتُهَاI would have ransomed her
بِنَفْسِيwith my own life وَفَاءًin fidelity غَيْرَwithout نَقْصٍshortfall وَلاَnor بَخْسٍdiminution
So if a living soul could ransom the dead, I would have ransomed her
If a living being could ransom the dead I would ransom you
With my own life, in fidelity, without shortfall or diminution.
With my soul in full, no less and no stinginess
