طابَgrew sweet عَيْشِيmy life بِرَغْمِdespite أَنْفِthe nose of الْعَذُولِthe reprover
طابَ عَيْشِي بِرَغْمِ أَنْفِ الْعَذُولِ
وَتَمتَّعْتُand I enjoyed مِنْfrom وِصالِunion with وَصُولِa devoted beloved
وَتَمتَّعْتُ مِنْ وِصالِ وَصُولِ
My life grew sweet, to spite the censor;
My life grew sweet, in defiance of the reprover.
I reveled in union with a love who yields.
And I enjoyed union with a devoted beloved.

فَرَأَيْنا تِشْرِينَ فِي أَيْلُولِ
Fair weather came to us without a promise,
And the breeze came to us without a prior promise,
and we saw October arrive in September.
So we saw Tishrin in Aylul.

So take the cup, my two friends, from a cup—
So I accept the cup, my two friends, from a cup-

bearer, handsome, whose coyness is welcome.

His palms made the goblets sweeter-scented still,
His two palms added sweetness to the goblets' sweetness,
and lent the wine the north wind’s perfume.
And he lent the wine the sweetness of the north wind.
