I have lost love and been bereft of the loving friend.

And day and night have worn away what was fresh in me.

For a long time I obeyed desire,

and ran a long course alongside pleasure.

So I denied my pleasure my cup,

and resolved to shun every union.

After the imam of guidance, should I seek

solace and fill my eyes with sleep,

when his enemies killed him unawares,

and did not find him fierce and ready?

As though he had never been amid a great host,

turning back death and cutting down the troops.

It would grieve him—yet how could I reach him?—

to see me, for my merit, a solitary captive.

The narrow confines of prisons press upon me,

and I reckon myself dead without having died.

And through him I had been master of time,

gladdening friends and saddening the envious.

So I laid my cheek beneath the enemies' tread,

and my family, for my sake, laid down their cheeks.

And losing him acquainted me with calamities,

and subdued what was stubborn and hardy in me.

Oh, if only the riders who announced his death to us

had announced our death to him, and he had gained immortality!
