Why did you not answer back to the spiteful foe,

and accept counsel from the sincere friend?

Now that you have filled my heart with longing,

you have unjustly followed it with searing despair.

And my soul strained toward you with a wish

that I savor like clear, flowing water.

You pushed my hope away after drawing it near,

and you will surely recall my goodness amid my wrongdoing.

What ails the imam, that his ways have changed

because of a satirist's words in place of my praises?

Each day I hope for fairness from one

who hastens to wrong me at the spiteful foe's word.

My embers, if you wish, lie quenched and dormant,

and if you wish, they are like a gleaming flame.

And the fire's light may be hidden from you

until the fire-striker's fingertips stir it.
