ياO مُلْزمِيyou who charge me بِالذَّنْبِwith the sin ماwhat لَمْdid not أَفْعَلI do
يا مُلْزمِي بِالذَّنْبِ ما لَمْ أَفْعَل
وموليّاand turning away عَنْfrom وَجْهِface وُدٍّlove مُقْبلapproaching
وموليّا عَنْ وَجْهِ وُدٍّ مُقْبل
O you who charge me with a sin I did not commit,
O He who holds me to account for what I have not done,
O you who bind me to a sin I did not commit,
And turn away from the face of love drawing near,
And turns away from my pleading face,
And turn away from a face of affection drawing near,
أَوَand (question) ماnot نَهاكَforbade you جَمالُthe beauty وَجْهِكَyour face أَنْto تَرَىyou are seen
أَوَ ما نَهاكَ جَمالُ وَجْهِكَ أَنْ تَرَى
مُتَعالِياًhaughty فِيin الظُّلْمِinjustice غَيْرَnot المُجْملِthe gracious one
مُتَعالِياً فِي الظُّلْمِ غَيْرَ المُجْملِ
Has the beauty of your face not forbidden you to be seen
Does not your beauty forbid you to see
Did the beauty of your face not forbid you to be seen
Haughty in injustice, not acting graciously?
One exalted in the darkness, other than the Exalted?
Arrogant in tyranny, lacking in grace?
عَدَلَacted justly الخَلِيفَةُthe caliph جَعْفَرٌJa'far فِيin مَلْكِهِhis kingdom
عَدَلَ الخَلِيفَةُ جَعْفَرٌ فِي مَلْكِهِ
وعَلَيَّand toward me فِيin مُلْكِthe kingdom الْهَوَىlove لَمْdid not يَعْدِلِhe acts justly
وعَلَيَّ فِي مُلْكِ الْهَوَى لَمْ يَعْدِلِ
The caliph Ja'far dealt justly in his kingdom,
Caliph Ja'far ruled justly in his kingdom,
The Caliph Ja'far dealt justly in his dominion,
Yet toward me, in love's kingdom, he was not just.
Yet over me in the kingdom of love he was not just.
Yet towards me, in the dominion of love, he was not just.
مَلِكٌa king يُسابِقُraces ahead of وَعْدَهُhis promise إِنْجازُهُhis fulfillment
مَلِكٌ يُسابِقُ وَعْدَهُ إِنْجازُهُ
وَيَجُودُand gives generously مُبْتَدِئاًon his own initiative بِماwith what لَمْdid not يُسْألhe is asked
وَيَجُودُ مُبْتَدِئاً بِما لَمْ يُسْأل
A king whose fulfillment races ahead of his promise,
A king whose fulfillment outstrips his pledge
A king whose fulfillment races ahead of his promise,
And who gives freely, unprompted, what he has not been asked for.
And who gives freely, unasked.
And who bestows generously, initiating gifts unasked.
سَمَّاهُnamed him مُقْتَدِراًMuqtadir (powerful) إلهٌGod قادِرٌalmighty
سَمَّاهُ مُقْتَدِراً إلهٌ قادِرٌ
وَعَلاand rose بِهِthrough him عِزٌّglory الْعَلِيthe lofty وَالمُعْتَلَيand the exalted
وَعَلا بِهِ عِزٌّ الْعَلِي وَالمُعْتَلَي
God Almighty named him Muqtadir,
A mighty God named him the All Powerful,
A capable God named him Al-Muqtadir,
And through him rose the glory of the lofty and exalted.
And through him the Most High and Sublime prevailed.
And through him rose the glory of the High and Exalted.
طالَsurpassed المُلوكَthe kings بِعَفْوِهِthrough his pardon ونَوالِهِand his bounty
طالَ المُلوكَ بِعَفْوِهِ ونَوالِهِ
وكَذاand likewise يَطُولُhe surpasses لَهُمْover them بِعُمْرٍwith a lifespan أَطْوَلِlonger
وكَذا يَطُولُ لَهُمْ بِعُمْرٍ أَطْوَلِ
He surpassed kings through his pardon and bounty,
His pardon and gifts sustain the kings,
He surpassed all kings in his pardon and his bounty,
And likewise he surpasses them with a longer life.
And thus may they live yet longer lives.
And so may he surpass them with a longer life.
