O my nights in the sanctuary, I do not forget

you, despite all the disquiet you brought.

So it is as though their visions never left us,

nor a cupbearer served us the cup of death.

    لا تخالي الردى سريعَ اللحاق

    Return, then, O their phantoms, in safety;

do not suppose death is swift to overtake.

longs; longing is the lovers' brand.

O my homes I loved, O most precious

O my loved ones in my cherished dwellings,

and the vast, vast stretch of my horizons—

may God guide your steps through life,

and spare you the pitfalls of failure,

and protect you, and adorn you with virtues

    immortal, enduring through the nights.

O our hoped-for day, how blessed a day you are!

You are known to our Lord, the Creator.

Loved ones meet within your spacious

horizon, and are healed of longing's burning ache.

They are blackbirds amid the surge of eternity,

    singing of tender memories.

and still they love the upward paths.

We have taken off the robe of life, still new,

and gulped down death from a brimming cup.

And we awoke to a frowning morning,

and the thick night was dark to its depths.

The soul has wearied of its waking and its slumber,

and of my morning and evening draughts of its sorrow.

When, then, shall I rest from its cruel

burden, and escape its glittering spell?

O life's setting, you have made me forget

    the light, and banished me from radiance;

and erased existence, leaving only traces

bound in fetters by the hand of decay.

    They spoke plainly in well-wrought

speech, and revealed their closely guarded secret.

And knelt, unable to ward off calamities,

no, nor desiring the lofty vision.

Our days announced to us their ending,

and we broke free of their choking fetter.

Death freed us from their harsh

captivity, and the bondage they contained.

What use to me is the moon at its full, if

my crescent keeps company with decay and the dark of the moon?

Many a night the heart has supplied with

light, and many a night is pitch-black in all its layers.

adventurer, nor overpower the one who races ahead.

Every branch is bound for decay and withering,

like a ruined trace, broken into fragments.

How can death keep me from my family,

and my being kept away not sear death itself?

I am in God's grasp! How greatly I praise

my servitude, and how I love my fetters.

Go, then, O life—go utterly away,

and cast me out of your pitch-dark night.

exhausted me, and my drowning was sweet to me.

Oh, the poison we relish, and the deadly venom

the bitten one sips like an antidote!

Healing does not hover around my bed,

and bitter illness grips me by the throat.

Rest, then, O sick, tormented one,

    from a terror-stricken, throbbing heart.

The cups of love have run dry, and gladness

has vanished; parting has appeared behind the embrace.

And youth's horses have been stripped of

companionship—and how noble are its thoroughbred steeds!

And I folded youth into the pages of

life, and bade it farewell with flowing tears.

Sleep, then, O life, in your tender

cave, and in your soft, enduring cradle.
