I yearn for you whenever the sun rises,

and mourn you as long as I live, in private and in public.

My beloved, O my desire, and O ultimate goal of my hopes,

you folded my heart's ribs over glowing coals.

And I spent the night communing with you and yearning for you,

and long to meet you till the end of time.

As though I were love's melody, the lyre of passion,

I lament the beloved with crimson tears.

I fashion them into verse overflowing with sorrows,

and string them into a necklace that puts pearls to shame.

And I lodge them in a heart torn apart with grief

for them, and in an eye whose tears flow forever.

So O days with them, may you remain fresh despite decay,

shimmering as light shimmers within the ribs of flowers.

    يزدكَ الهوى ما شئتَ من دامعِ الشعر

    And O their shade, deepen my longing and anguish;

love will give you all the tearful verse you desire.

So O departing ones, separation has not turned them away,

nor has the grave's darkness veiled their lights.

My eyelids are their refuge; my ribs are their graves.

Oh, what graves love has traced within my breast!

    سلوا الليلَ هل دارتْ به مقلةُ الفجر

    Ask the eyelid whether sleep's drowsiness has passed over it;

ask the night whether the eye of dawn has circled through it.

To God I complain of the separation I suffer,

and the memories that throb within my thoughts.

    فودَّعتُ أفراحي وفارقني صبري

    My soul be your ransom, you loving ones who bade farewell;

so I bade farewell to my joys, and my patience forsook me.

And the vast earth gave me no shelter, as though I were

a prisoner spending my life in exile and captivity,

far from consolation, bereft of those

whose love spread the delight of poetry upon my lips.

Do the beloved know that their image

is my nightly companion in life's sweetness and bitterness?

If a person forgets his companions in prosperity,

there is no good in remembrance in the hour of hardship.

O days of ours, may your fruit remain honey-sweet,

like a fragrant garden swaying in robes of green.

I commune with you, my heart aching from love's anguish,

and cherish you with affection free of treachery.

And I water you generously with my eye's tears,

when the clouds' eyelid withholds the pouring rain.

Peace upon those days, for they

supplied life's autumn with lush, fresh growth,

and adorned my songs and embroidered my tears—

thus, from strung pearls to scattered pearls.

And all you wish of soothing shade and fragrance,

and all you wish of singing birds and rivers.

Hopes amid life's splendor and its dawn,

their shaded places bejeweled with all that delights and entices.

I see you with an eye whose times have turned hostile,

yet it has known only fidelity despite estrangement.

And I yearn for your memory; remembrance is solace

for one who has lived in agonizing sorrow and loss.

And I long for companions whose affection poured me

cups of love, till I grew giddy with intoxication,

and till time seemed obedient to my fingertips,

granting my desire and fulfilling my purpose.

When you visit me, O their shade, in sleep's sanctuary,

    then my good fortune visits me, and my joy returns;

and the world shines in my eyes, and resplendent grow

my nights with lights and radiant stars.

And it eases the searing affliction I endure,

and lightens the raging thoughts I lament.

I passed the house that decay had ravaged

and torn down until it became a wasteland.

Then I was torn by a heart melting with longing

for it, and by tears that no rebuke could restrain.

I wander around it, and sorrow wrings my soul,

and floods it now with joy, now with dread.

    هنا الملتقى بعد القطيعةِ والهجر

    Here are family, loved ones, purpose, and hopes;

here is the meeting place after estrangement and abandonment.

    Here memory crouches; here visions lie asleep;

here death appears in its yellow robes.

Here a person reads the book of his life—

and oh, the horror of what he finds in that book!

Pages that, if you turn them, deepen your sorrow

at the deadly treachery and evil they contain.

Here is the greatest lesson, whose meaning is elusive,

in need of probing, yet beyond all probing.

Here the sorrowful heart bows humbly, reciting

the book of inevitable death, line after line.

My life be a ransom for tender, imprisoned souls,

their sides steeped in perfume, their fragrance musky,

fragrant with remembrance and redolent of love,

as though they held a perfume surpassing perfume itself.

I live through them in joy; contentment makes me happy,

and their image suffices me when it visits by night.

Peace upon the beloved: indeed their shades

surely fill this mind with overflowing bounty.

And without them I would not have plucked love's basil,

and without them I would not have glimpsed life's lightning flash,

    nor fashioned delicate, plaintive melodies,

more tender than whispered confidences and clearer than wine.

The lonely, bewildered one sees his companion in them,

and through them forgets the abode of deceit and guile.

Ruin upon the world, for it is no delight

if you are in one half and your heart in the other.

And oh, the misery of our life, and oh, the length of our grief!

And oh, how fierce the coercion we endure in life!

And oh, our longing for companions in the depths of death,

and in the resting place's stillness, and in the sleep of dust.

We pass as phantoms draped in sorrow,

and strip off life's garments, unaware,

and cast off heavy, dreadful days,

devoid of color, empty of enchantment.
