رهينُ الرؤى الحلوةِ الوافيهْ

I remembered you, my heart prey to enchantment,

I thought of you, while my heart was seized by passion

captive to sweet visions in all their fullness.

Captive to the sweet fulfilling visions

و "لبنان" يسبحُ في نشوةٍ

و "لبنان" يسبحُ في نشوةٍ

من السحرِ والحبّ والعافيهْ

من السحرِ والحبّ والعافيهْ

And Lebanon swims in ecstasy

And “Lebanon” swims in rapture

of magic, love, and well-being.

Of magic, love, and wellbeing

توشَّحَ بالعبقِ المستطابِ

توشَّحَ بالعبقِ المستطابِ

وغلغل في البهجةِ الضَّافيهْ

وغلغل في البهجةِ الضَّافيهْ

It draped itself in delightful fragrance

Adorned with the most fragrant scent

and plunged deep into abundant joy,

And stirred with abundant joy

ونامَ على شرفاتِ الغمامِ

ونامَ على شرفاتِ الغمامِ

وطافتْ بهِ الخضرة الحاليه

وطافتْ بهِ الخضرة الحاليه

and slept upon the balconies of the clouds,

And slept on the clouds' balconies

and lovely greenery circled around it.

As the present greenery floated around it

تناثرُ فوقَ الروابي قُراهُ

تناثرُ فوقَ الروابي قُراهُ

كما تتناثرُ آماليه

كما تتناثرُ آماليه

Its villages lie scattered over the hills,

Villages scattered atop the hills

just as my hopes scatter.

Like my hopes scattered

على كلِّ مائسةٍ صادحٌ

على كلِّ مائسةٍ صادحٌ

وفي كل وارفةٍ شاديه

وفي كل وارفةٍ شاديه

On every swaying tree, a songster,

A chanter on every slope

and in every shady tree, a songstress.

And in every meadow, a celebrant

وتُصغي الوهادُ إلى قصَّةٍ

وتُصغي الوهادُ إلى قصَّةٍ

من الحبّ تسردها الساقيه

من الحبّ تسردها الساقيه

And the valleys listen to a tale

And the valleys listen to a tale

of love, which the stream recounts.

Of love recited by the water-bearer

وقد أنصتَ الكونُ إلاّ صدى

وقد أنصتَ الكونُ إلاّ صدى

يردّدُ أنسْودةَ الراعيه

يردّدُ أنسْودةَ الراعيه

And the universe listened in silence, save an echo

While the universe listened to nothing but the echo

repeating the shepherdess's song.

تطلَّعُ في زهوها الراسياتُ

تطلَّعُ في زهوها الراسياتُ

حنيناً إلى عودةِ الثاغيه

حنيناً إلى عودةِ الثاغيه

The steadfast mountains gaze in their splendor,

The plateau gazed longingly

longing for the bleating sheep's return.

Awaiting the return of the lost

ونمَّ على الدربِ سحرُ الغناءِ

ونمَّ على الدربِ سحرُ الغناءِ

فأغفى على النغمةِ الصَّافيه

فأغفى على النغمةِ الصَّافيه

And song's enchantment made itself known along the path,

The magic of singing slept on the path

so it dozed upon the clear melody.

Lulled by the pure tune

وظلَّ المساءُ يحومُ عليهِ

وظلَّ المساءُ يحومُ عليهِ

ويرعاهُ بالمقلةِ الرانيه

ويرعاهُ بالمقلةِ الرانيه

And evening kept hovering over it,

And the evening continued hovering over it

and watched over it with an intent eye.

Guarding it with the loving eyelash

وفي خلوةِ الحقلِ نبعٌ حبيبٌ

وفي خلوةِ الحقلِ نبعٌ حبيبٌ

يهدهدُ أوجاعهُ الباكيه

يهدهدُ أوجاعهُ الباكيه

And in the field's seclusion, a beloved spring

And in the seclusion of the field, a beloved spring

lulls its weeping pains.

That laments its crying pains

كأنَّ على النبع ِ قيثارةً

كأنَّ على النبع ِ قيثارةً

تنوحُ ملوَّعةً شاكيه

تنوحُ ملوَّعةً شاكيه

As though upon the spring there were a lyre,

As if on the spring, a lyre

wailing, anguished and lamenting.

Mourning, complaining, and weepy

و (بيروتُ) نائمةٌ في السفوحِ

و (بيروتُ) نائمةٌ في السفوحِ

تُتَممُ أحلامها الزّاهيه

تُتَممُ أحلامها الزّاهيه

And Beirut lies asleep on the slopes,

And (Beirut) sleeps on the slopes

completing her radiant dreams.

Fulfilling its blooming dreams

ترامتْ على البحرِ مأخوذةً

ترامتْ على البحرِ مأخوذةً

تُناجيهِ حانيةً صابيه

تُناجيهِ حانيةً صابيه

She cast herself upon the sea, spellbound,

Sprawling on the sea, infatuated

whispering to it, tender and yearning.

Whispering to it, swaying

رأيتُكِ (لبنانيَ) المشتهى

رأيتُكِ (لبنانيَ) المشتهى

وجنَّتهُ اللذةَ الشّافيه

وجنَّتهُ اللذةَ الشّافيه

I saw you as my longed-for Lebanon

I saw you, my coveted (Lebanese)

and its delightful, healing paradise.

And its enjoyable, healing heaven

وأبصرتُ وجهكِ يطفو عليهِ

وأبصرتُ وجهكِ يطفو عليهِ

ويغمرُ أرجاءهُ النائيه

ويغمرُ أرجاءهُ النائيه

And I saw your face floating above it

And I saw your face floating over it

and flooding its distant reaches.

Flooding its remote corners

فغابتْ مسارحهُ الغالياتُ

فغابتْ مسارحهُ الغالياتُ

ولم يبقَ غيرُك يا (غاليه)

ولم يبقَ غيرُك يا (غاليه)

So its cherished vistas vanished,

So the expensive theaters disappeared

and none but you remained, O dear one.

And no one remained but you, my (precious)
