وهو يحيا لحناً وينسابُ عطرا
Barada, the longed-for, thinks in verse,
The desired inspiration ponders poetry
And he lives as melody and flows as fragrance.
As he lives a melody and flows fragrance
فيin حناياهُhis folds أضلعٌribs تتناجىwhisper to one another
في حناياهُ أضلعٌ تتناجى
وقلوبٌand hearts منfrom حرقةburning pain الحبّlove حرّىaflame
وقلوبٌ من حرقة الحبّ حرّى
Within his folds are ribs that whisper to one another,
In his bosom ribs converse
And hearts aflame with love's burning pain.
And hearts burnt with passion for love blazed
خبرhe knew through experience العالمينَthe world's peoples جيلاًa generation فجيلاًthen another generation
خبر العالمينَ جيلاً فجيلاً
ووعىand he understood الكائناتall beings دهراًan age فدهراthen another age
ووعى الكائنات دهراً فدهرا
He has known the world's peoples, generation after generation,
He told the tale of the two worlds generation after generation
And understood all beings, age after age.
And comprehended existence eon after eon
خطhe inscribed فيin مصحفthe scripture الوجودexistence سطوراًlines
خط في مصحف الوجود سطوراً
باقياتenduring تختالُthey strut تيهاًin conceit وكبراand pride
باقيات تختالُ تيهاً وكبرا
He inscribed lines in the scripture of existence,
He lined the manuscript of existence with verses
Enduring, strutting in conceit and pride,
Remaining wonders swaying in grandeur and pride
معجباتٍwondrous أنقىpurer منthan الفنart لألآradiance (first part)
معجباتٍ أنقى من الفن لألآ
ءًcompletion of 'radiance' وأبهىand more splendid منthan سطعةِthe gleam العلمknowledge فكراin thought
ءً وأبهى من سطعةِ العلم فكرا
Wondrous, purer in radiance than art,
More wondrous than art itself
And more splendid in thought than the gleam of knowledge.
And more magnificent than the radiance of knowledge and thought
يتلوَّىhe twists زهواًproudly كراقصةِlike a dancer الحاthe tavern (first part)
يتلوَّى زهواً كراقصةِ الحا
نِcompletion of 'tavern' تنزّىshe leaps وجداًin ecstasy وتقطرُand she drips خمراwine
نِ تنزّى وجداً وتقطرُ خمرا
He twists proudly like a tavern dancer,
Swaying in glory like a dancing beauty
Leaping in ecstasy and dripping wine.
Delighting in rapture and dripping wine
مرَّhe passed فيthrough الأرضthe earth كالربيعlike spring ائتلاقاًin radiance
مرَّ في الأرض كالربيع ائتلاقاً
وكأيامهِand like its days صفاءًin serenity وبشراand cheer
وكأيامهِ صفاءً وبشرا
He passed across the earth, radiant as spring,
He passed through the earth gleaming
And like its days in serenity and cheer.
Like the days of spring, serene and gladdening
وكساand he clothed جلَّقJilliq الأنيقةthe elegant ثوباًa robe
وكسا جلَّق الأنيقة ثوباً
عبقرياًextraordinary منthan نعمةِthe tenderness الفجرdawn أطرىsofter
عبقرياً من نعمةِ الفجر أطرى
And he clothed elegant Jilliq in a robe,
And dressed the elegant in a genius garment
Extraordinary, softer than dawn's tenderness.
From the grace of dawn more fragrant
أيّهذاO you النهرُthe river الحبيبُbeloved إلىto نفـsoul (first part)
أيّهذا النهرُ الحبيبُ إلى نفـ
ـسيcompletion of 'my soul' وياand O ملهميmy inspirer إذاwhen قلتُI utter شعراverse
ـسي ويا ملهمي إذا قلتُ شعرا
O river, dear to my soul,
O beloved river to my soul
And O my inspirer whenever I utter verse,
And my inspirer whenever I recite poetry
عشْlive بقلبيin my heart لحناًas a melody علىthroughout الدهرtime حلواًsweet
عشْ بقلبي لحناً على الدهر حلواً
واسرِand glide فيthrough خاطريmy thoughts فتوناًenchantment وسحراand magic
واسرِ في خاطري فتوناً وسحرا
Live in my heart as a melody, sweet for all time,
Live in my heart a sweet melody for eternity
And glide through my thoughts as enchantment and magic.
And captivate in my mind enchantment and magic
