إِذاif لَمnot يَكُنthere be لِلقَومِfor the people إِلّاexcept رَغيدَةٌmilk-and-flour porridge
إِذا لَم يَكُن لِلقَومِ إِلّا رَغيدَةٌ
يُخَصُّis singled out بِهاfor it المَفطومُthe weaned child دونَrather than الأَكابِرِthe adults
يُخَصُّ بِها المَفطومُ دونَ الأَكابِرِ
If the people have nothing but milk-and-flour porridge,
When a people have nothing left but idle talk
it is reserved for the weaned child, not the adults.
With which fools are singled out, not the wise
