غَبَرَتendured خَيلُناour horses نُقاسِمُهاwe share with them القوsustenance (first fragment)
غَبَرَت خَيلُنا نُقاسِمُها القو
تَcompletes ‘sustenance’ وَلَمand did not يُبقِleave حاصِدُthe reaper المَحلِdrought عوداa twig
تَ وَلَم يُبقِ حاصِدُ المَحلِ عودا
Our horses endured, while we shared our sustenance with them,
Our horses' dust we share,
and drought’s reaper had left not a twig:
No straw left for the thresher there,
شَتوَةٌa winter توسِعُprovide abundantly الجِمالُthe camels لَهاfor them الرَسmilk (first fragment)
شَتوَةٌ توسِعُ الجِمالُ لَها الرَس
لَcompletes ‘milk’ وَنُسقيand we provide drink عِيالَناour dependents تَصريداin scant draughts
لَ وَنُسقي عِيالَنا تَصريدا
a winter when the camels lavished milk on them,
A winter so biting, the camels bear,
while we gave our dependents only scant draughts.
And we water our families drop by drop.
ذاكَthat حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen الرَبيعُspring نَفىbanished الأَزhardship (first fragment)
ذاكَ حَتّى إِذا الرَبيعُ نَفى الأَز
مَةَcompletes ‘hardship’ قُدناwe led بِهاwith them شَياطينَdevils قوداlong-necked
مَةَ قُدنا بِها شَياطينَ قودا
So it went until spring banished hardship;
Until spring sweeps the gloom away,
we led them forth, long-necked devils,
We drive the devils, our whips at play,
وَرَمَيناand we hurled بِهاwith them دِيارَthe dwellings of الأَعاديthe enemies
وَرَمَينا بِها دِيارَ الأَعادي
فَأَثابَتso they repaid بِكُلِّfor every قَعبٍwooden bowl قَعوداa young male camel
فَأَثابَت بِكُلِّ قَعبٍ قَعودا
and hurled them against our enemies’ dwellings.
And seek the foe's abodes to fray,
For every wooden bowl, they repaid us with a young male camel.
Each dale and hill is victory's prop.
حَبَّذاhow fine! هُنَّthey مَتجَراًas a trading venture رَبِحَmade a profit الصَفthe bargain (first fragment)
حَبَّذا هُنَّ مَتجَراً رَبِحَ الصَف
قَةَcompletes ‘bargain’ تَحويthey amass الغِنىwealth وَتَشفيand they satisfy الحَقوداthe vengeful one
قَةَ تَحوي الغِنى وَتَشفي الحَقودا
How fine they are as a venture—a profitable bargain—
Blessed be the bargain that profits all,
amassing wealth and satisfying the vengeful!
Dispelling want and envy's gall.
