أَلَمdid ... not? تَرَyou see ماwhat بَينيbetween me وَبَينَand between اِبنِson of عامِرٍʿĀmir
مِنَof الوِدِّthe affection قَدalready بالَتurinated عَلَيهِon it الثَعالِبُthe foxes
Have you not seen the bond between me and Ibn ʿĀmir—
that affection on which foxes have urinated?
وَأَصبَحَand became باقِيwhat remained of الوِدِّthe affection بَينيbetween me وَبَينَهُand between him
كَأَنas though لَمnot يَكُنit had been وَالدّهرُand time فيهِin it العَجائِبُwonders
And the affection left between me and him has become
as though it had never been—and time has its wonders.
فَقُلتُso I said تَعَلَّمknow أَنَّthat وَصلَكَkeeping ties with you جاهِدَاًstriving hard
وَهَجرَكَand breaking with you عِنديto me شِقَّةٌa distance مُتقارِبُclose
So I said: Know that striving to keep ties with you
and breaking with you are, to me, but a little way apart.
فَماfor ... not أَناI بِالباكِيone who weeps عَلَيكَfor you صَبابَةًardent longing
وَلاnor بِالَّذيone who تَأتيكَreach you مِنّيfrom me المَثالِبُreproaches
For I am not one to weep for you out of longing,
nor one from whom reproaches will reach you.
إِذاif المَرءُa man لَمnot يُحبِبكَhe loves you إِلّاexcept تَكَرُّهَاًreluctantly
بَداbecomes apparent لَكَto you مِنfrom أَخلاقِهِhis character ماwhat يُغالِبُhe struggles to suppress
If a man loves you only reluctantly,
what he struggles to suppress in his character will show itself to you.
فَدَعهُso leave him وَصَرمُand severing الكُلِّall أَهونُthe least grievous حادِثٍmisfortune
وَفيand in الأَرضِthe earth لِلمَرءِfor a man الجَليدِresolute مَذاهِبُpaths
So leave him; severing all ties is the lightest misfortune,
and on earth a resolute man has many paths.
