لَدىat مَوطِنٍa place أَضحىhad become لَهُfor it النَجمُthe star بادِياvisible
When Minqar called me to leadership,
at a place where the star had come into view,
شَدَدتُI strengthened لَهاfor it أَزريmy loins وَقَدand already كُنتُI had been قَبلَهاbefore it
أَشَدُّI would tighten لِأَحناءِfor the twists of الأُمورِaffairs إِزارياmy waistcloth
I girded my loins for it, though even before then
I would tighten my waistcloth for the twists of affairs.
وَنَحنُand we حَفَزناdrove onward الحَوفَزانِal-Hawfazan بِطَعنَةٍwith a spear-thrust
سَقَتهُmade him drink نَجيعاًfresh blood مِنfrom دَمِthe blood of الجَوفِthe belly آنياscalding hot
And we drove al-Hawfazan on with a spear-thrust
that made him drink fresh blood from his belly, scalding hot.
