Ah, Asma came by night, a night visitor,

and departed, though the phantom awakens

a grieving man's longing, as though his heart were

a wing whose two bones have weakened, so it flutters.

    يَحنُّ اِلَيها وَالِهٌ وَيَتوقُ

    Asma cared little that separation had stretched far;

a love-bewildered man yearns for her and longs.

Leave me be, for miserliness, O Umm Haytham,

    steals away men's virtuous qualities.

Leave me be, and yield to my wishes, for I

am protective of my pure, lofty family honor.

And I am a generous man with dependents, troubled

by misfortunes whose burdens befall me, and by obligations.

And many a traveler seeking dogs' barks I called in after all was still,

when the winter star's setting was at hand.

    تَلُفُّ رياحٌ ثَوبَهُ وَبُروقُ

    He battled the cold onset of night;

winds twisted his cloak, and flashes of lightning

blazed within a mass of rain-pouring cloud,

with a streaming rain-fringe hanging low beneath the clouds.

I gave him shelter, neither insulting him nor saying,

to deny him hospitality, 'The place is cramped.'

So I said to him, 'Welcome! Be at ease! You are most welcome!'

'Here are a morning draught, ready at hand, and a friend.'

And I laughed with him before I knew his name,

to put him at ease with me; a generous man is gentle.

I rose to the sleeping, kneeling camels; they shielded themselves—

massive, high-humped beasts, like towers, long-toothed—

behind a white she-camel, early to calve, who looked,

when she stood broadside before the pregnant herd, like a pampered sire.

I felled her with a blow to the leg, or a broad, gushing stab,

leaving a gaping wound in front of the shoulders.

The two butchers came to her and stood over her,

sending her hide flying while she still gasped.

Then her udder and hump were dragged to us,

and a white, well-bred calf, crawling to stand,

cut from the womb—its membrane stripped away with a sword

by a brother, gentle in his fellowship with good men.

So late that night, we and the guest had from her

fat, marrow-rich roast meat and an evening draught.

And through the night, against the east wind's bitter cold, he had

    a quilt and a smooth, fine-textured cloak.

Every generous man wards off blame with hospitality,

and there is a path to goodness among the virtuous.

    وَلَكِنَّ أَخلاقَ الرِجالِ تَضيقُ

    By your life, lands have never been too narrow for their people;

    but men's characters grow narrow.

Roots from Zurarah raised me to the heights,

and roots from Fadaki and al-Ashadd.

Noble qualities place a young man in an ancestral stock

on high, while some forebears are lowly.
