أُحبّكَI love you فيin القنوطdespair، وفيand in التمنّيhopeful wishing
كأنيas though I منكَfrom you صرتُI became، وصرتَand you became منّيfrom me
I love you in despair and in hope,
I love you in despair, and in wishful thinking,
As though I had become part of you, and you part of me.
As if I became part of you, and you became part of me.
أحبّكَI love you فوقbeyond ماwhat وسعتْcould hold ضلوعيmy ribs
وفوقand beyond مدىreach of يديmy hand، وبلوغِand the reach of ظنّيmy imagining
I love you beyond what my ribs could hold,
I love you beyond the capacity of my ribs,
And beyond my hand's reach and the reach of my imagining.
And beyond the reach of my hands, and my expectations.
هوىًlove مُترنّحُswaying الأعطافِthe body's sides، طلقٌunfettered
علىon سهلplain of الشبابِyouth المطمئنّtranquil
A love, swaying from side to side, unfettered,
A passion, limp in limbs, serene
On the tranquil plain of youth.
On the plain of youth, calm and assured.
أبوحI confess إذنthen، فكلُّfor every هبوبِblowing of ريحٍwind
حديثٌtalk عنكَabout you فيin الدنياthe world، وعنّيand about me
Then I confess, for every gust of wind
So I confess, every passing breeze
Is talk of you in the world, and of me.
Speaks of you in the world, and speaks of me.
سينشرناwill spread us الصباحُthe morning علىover الروابيthe hills
علىover الواديthe valley، عليover الشجرthe trees الأغنّthick-leaved
Morning will spread us over the hills,
Dawn will spread us on the hills,
Over the valley, over the thick-leaved trees.
On the valley, on the melodious trees.
أبوحI confess إذنthen، فهلso do تدريknow الدواليthe grapevines
بأنكَthat you أنتَyou yourself أقداحيmy goblets، ودَنّيand my wine jar؟
Then I confess—do the grapevines know
So I confess, do the pots know
That you yourself are my goblets and my wine jar?
That you are my cups, and my close one?
أتمتمI murmur باسمwith the name of ثغركَyour lips فوقabove كأسيmy cup
وأرشفهاand I sip it، كأنكَas though you، أوor كأنيas though I
I murmur the name of your lips above my cup,
I murmur your lip’s name over my cup
And sip it, as though it were you—or me.
And sip it, as if you, as if it were me.
نعيمٌbliss حبُّناour love، فانظرْso look بعينيwith my eye
وعرسٌand a wedding للمنىfor wishes، فاسمعْso listen بأذنيwith my ear
Our love is bliss, so look with my eye,
Our love is bliss, so look through my eyes,
And a wedding for wishes, so listen with my ear.
And a wedding to hopes, so hear through my ears.
كأنas though الصحوَclear skies يلمعgleams فيin ظنونيmy thoughts
ويخفقand flutters فيin ضلوعيmy ribs ألفُa thousand غصنbranches
As though clear skies gleam in my thoughts,
As if dawn glimmers in my notions,
And a thousand branches flutter within my ribs.
And a thousand branches flutter in my ribs.
علىupon الوترthe string الحنونِtender خلعتُI shed شوقيmy longing
وماجand surged هوايَmy passion فيin آه'Ah' (a sigh) المغنّيthe singer
Upon the tender string I shed my longing,
On the affectionate string, I unleashed my longing,
And my passion surged in the singer's 'Ah.'
And stirred my passion in the singer's sigh.
ففيfor in النغمthe melody العميقdeep إليكَtoward you أمشيI walk،
وأسلكand I make my way جانبَbeside الوترthe string المرنّringing
For in the deep melody I walk toward you,
So in the deep melody I walk to you,
And make my way beside the ringing string.
And tread the side of the supple string.
