    I came to him at longing's appointed hour, and he came.

    And we met, and said whatever we wished.

  2. ﻧﺤﻦ ﻓﻲ اﻟﺬﻛﺮى ﺗﻼﻗﻴﻨﺎ ﻋﻠﻰ

    ﻗُﺒَﻞ اﻟﺸﻮق, وﺿﻮﺿﺎء اﻟﻠّﻘﺎء

    We met in remembrance amid

    longing's kisses and the clamor of reunion.

  3. وﺗﺸﺎﻛﻴﻨﺎ ﺗﺒﺎرﻳﺢ اﻟﻨﱠﻮى

    And we lamented to each other the torments of separation,

    and there we breathed a deep sigh.

  4. ﻓﻜﺄنﱠ اﻟﻐﻴﺐ ﻗﺪ أﺿﺤﻰ ﻟﻨﺎ:

    So it was as though the unseen had become for us

    Mount Barouk or Wadi al-Safa:

  5. ﻣﻠﺘﻘًﻰ ﻣﻦ ﺧُﻠَﺲ اﻟﺴﱠﻌﺪ، وﻣﻦ

    ﻟﺬﱠة اﻟﻐﻤﺾ, وﻣﻦ ﻧﻴﻞ اﻟﺮﱠﺟﺎء!

    a meeting place of stolen moments of happiness, and of

    the delight of slumber, and of hope fulfilled!

  6. ﺧﻄﻔﺖ ﺑﺎﻟﻨﱠﻘﻞ ﻓﻴﻪ ﻗﺪﻣﻲ

    There my foot darted from step to step,

    and my ear sought the whisper of the unseen.

    ﺳﺮﺣﺔ اﻟﻨﱠﻬﺮ ﺗﻮﻻﱠﻧﻲ اﻟﺒﻜﺎء

    From Barouk's summits, in the forenoon, to

    the river's spreading tree, weeping overtook me.

    Here conversation flowed, and here

    laughter rang, and happy people whispered together.

  9. ﻫﺬه اﻟﺪﱡﻧﻴﺎ اﻟﺘﻲ ﻛﺎﻧﺖ ﻟﻨﺎ

    ﺟﺮت اﻟﺮﻳﺢ ﻋﻠﻴﻬﺎ ﺑﺎﻟﻌﻔﺎء

    This world that once was ours—

    the wind swept over it, erasing every trace.

    ﻗُﻠْﻪُ دﻣﻊ العين أو قلُهْ اﻟﺮِّﺛﺎء!

    I came to it to cast my verse into the earth;

    call it the eye's tears, or call it elegy!

  11. ﻟﻴﺖ ﺷﻌﺮي!

    Would that I knew! Are these rhymes in my hand,

    or flasks brimming with tears?

    Oh, may God water the days of meeting!

    If only I had stored up provisions for the times of estrangement!

  13. ﻗﺮﺑﻲ، ﻳﺎ ﻧﺴﻤﺔ ﻣﺮﱠت ﺑﻬﻢ

    ﺟﺌﺖِ ﻣﻦ روضٍٍ، وﻣﻦ ﻇﻞﱟ وﻣﺎء

    Draw near, O breeze that passed by them;

    you came from a garden, and from shade and water.

    And softly now, O thirst's relief—

    God has brought you to a thirsty people!

    So spread through the quarter the tidings of fragrance,

    and open the radiant books of fragrant plants.

    O my father—a call that still remains

    in my mouth the sweetest of all calls.

    My share today from repeating it is enough:

    the delight of saying it, pride, and belonging!

  18. ﻧﻌﻤﺔٌ ﻣﻨﻚ ﺑﻜﻔّﻲ ﺳﻠﻤﺖ

    ﻳﺎ ﺳﺨﻲﱠ اﻟﻜﻒّ: واﺻﻠﺖَ اﻟﻌﻄﺎء!

    A blessing from you has remained safe in my palm;

    O generous-handed one, you have continued giving!

    I have become like one weeping over roses: mine are

    tears at the plucking, and solace in the fragrance.

    ﻛﻞُّ ﻣﻦ ﻓﻴﻪ تجنى, وأﺳﺎء

    O you who showed me kindness in a world

    where everyone has acted unjustly and done harm;

    ﻳﻮم أُﻇﻤﺌﺖ إﻟﻰ ﻃﻌﻢ اﻟﻮﻓﺎء

    O you who poured out your affection for me

    when I was made to thirst for the taste of loyalty;

  22. أﻳﻬﺎ اﻟﻮاﻫﺐ ﻟﻲ ﻣﻦ ﻧﻔﺴﻪ

    O you who gave me of yourself

    when I was wearied by the misers' stinginess:

    After you, I no longer weep for

    any loss; for in my eyes all people are alike.
