أَلَمDid ... not? أَكُI be باذِلاًfreely giving وُدّيmy affection وَنَصريand my aid
أَلَم أَكُ باذِلاً وُدّي وَنَصري
وَأَصرِفand I keep away عَنكُمfrom you (plural) ذَربيmy biting words وَلَغبيand my foolish talk
وَأَصرِف عَنكُم ذَربي وَلَغبي
Was I not freely giving my affection and my aid,
Was I not generous with my love and aid?
And sparing you my biting words and foolish talk,
Did I not turn away my harm and rage?
وَأَجعَلُand I place كُلَّevery مُضطَهَدٍoppressed person أَتانيwho came to me
وَأَجعَلُ كُلَّ مُضطَهَدٍ أَتاني
يَخافُfearing الضَيمُinjustice بَينَbetween حِشّاًinnards وَخِلبِand the heart’s covering
يَخافُ الضَيمُ بَينَ حِشّاً وَخِلبِ
And placing every oppressed person who came to me,
And make each troubled soul that turned to me
Fearing injustice, between my innards and my heart’s covering?
Find safety, though they came in fear's disguise.
