I fulfilled my duty with the Messenger's camel herds, though

Collectors had refused, and their protector returned no camel.

    ترامِي الأَعادي عِندَنا ما يَضيرُها

    Together, we guarded them from all people;

The enemies' volleys do them no harm while they are with us.

So I delivered them, lest I prove false to my pledge:

Lean camels whose backs had not been worn by riders.

Through them I sought piety and the glory of their story,

When a band's boaster vies with my tribe in honor.

And I am indeed of a tribe: when its deeds are counted,

Its living and its graves see glory in them.

Their young have not bowed in submission; as for their elders,

Their anchors are steady, their breasts pure.

And many a fierce-eyed, lofty man I have overcome, and a band

Of angry, furious men whose chests turned away from me.

    وَلَم يَثنِ سَيفي نَبحُها وَهريرُها

    And from Kannad's clan I collected what my pledge required;

And their barking and growling did not turn back my sword.

And many an ill-starred night amid affairs I have witnessed,

With a plan of resolve whose cord was twisted tight.

And many a king's pavilion I have entered, and a horseman

I have speared when the cavalry's raider charged.

So I opened a gap in its vanguard with a gaping, gushing wound,

Where one who hopes for life does it harm.

And many a scene of honor I have witnessed; I was not

Idle there, and today its outcome is praised.

I count the enemies' dread of me as boldness,

And he weeps whenever the soul's innermost thought whispers.
