إنَّindeed لَناwe have ضِرغامَةًa lion جُنادِلاmighty
فَاسئَلso ask بِناabout us إنif كَنتَyou are مِنَّاof us جاهِلاignorant
Indeed, we have a mighty lion.
So ask about us, if you are ignorant of us:
قَيساًQays وقَحطانَand Qahtan وَسائِلand ask وَائِلاWa'il
ماnot صادَفُواthey encountered اَفوَقَa broken-nocked arrow مِنَّاamong us ناصِلاwithout an arrowhead
Qays and Qahtan, and question Wa'il.
They found no broken-nocked, headless shaft among us,
اَيّامَin the days when شَنُّواthey unleashed الفِتَنَthe conflicts الجَلائِلاgrievous
فَعَرَكَتthen ground down مِنّاfrom among us بِهِمagainst them كَلاكِلاbreasts
In the days when they unleashed grievous strife.
Then one of ours ground them down, breast to breast,
مِنfrom بَعدِafter ماthat قَدalready مارَسُواthey grappled with الضَّلائِلاdeadly perils
صِمصامَةa keen sword يُطَبِّقُhe cleaves through المَفاصِلاthe joints
After they had already grappled with deadly perils—
A keen blade, cleaving through the joints,
مُشَمِّراًgirded for action قَدalready رَفَعَhe raised الذَّلاذِلاthe trailing hems
فَكانَso it was يَوماًa day قَمطَرِيراًgrim باسِلاfierce
Girded for action, his trailing hems raised high.
So it was a grim and dreadful day.
وَلَقِحَتand conceived حَربٌwar وَكانَتand she had been حائِلاnot pregnant
فَكَشَفَso he removed اللأواءَhardship وَالتَّلاتِلاand tribulations
And war conceived, though she had been barren.
He lifted hardship and tribulations
عَنfrom قَومِهِhis people وَفَرَّجَand relieved الزَّلازِلاthe upheavals
وَالاَزدَand the Azd قَدalready صَبَّحَhe assailed at dawn ثُكلاًbereavement ثَاكِلاbereaving
From his people, and stilled the upheavals.
And he struck the Azd at dawn with grievous bereavement,
فَتَرَكَso he left الحابِلَthe snare-setter مِنهُمamong them نابِلاan archer
مُقَدِّماًsending ahead اَمامَهُbefore him الجَحافِلاthe great armies
Leaving their snare-setters turned to archers,
Sending the great armies ahead of him:
بَرزِينَstalwarts شَتَّىscattered زِيَماًin separate bands اَيايِلاstags
Stalwart, in scattered bands, like stags,
Hollow-bellied, lean and gaunt,
سَوابِحاًswimming-gaited تَخالُهاyou would take them for الآجادِلاfalcons
تَلُوكُthey champ فِىin اَشداقِهاtheir jaws المَساحِلاthe bits
Swimming along, you would take them for falcons,
Champing the bits within their jaws,
كَرادِساًmassed squadrons تَخالُهاyou would take them for الاَعابِلاgreat white rocks
تَنزِفُthey drain يَومَon the day وِردِهاof their coming to drink المَناهِلاthe waterholes
In squadrons you would take for white crags.
They drain the waterholes the day they come to drink,
وَتَنزِحُand draw dry العادِيَّةَthe ancient wells العَدامِلاthe copious ones
تَسمَعُyou hear لِلزَّجرِat the urging بِهاamong them اَزامِلاmingled cries
And draw the ancient, copious wells dry.
You hear, as they are urged, a mingled din among them,
حَماحِماًlow whinnies تُجاوِبُanswering الصَّواهِلاthe neighing steeds
صَبَّحَهُمhe raided them at dawn فِىin دارِهِمtheir homeland نَآطِلاmighty steeds
Low whinnies answering the neighing steeds.
He struck them at dawn in their homes with mighty steeds,
يَحمِلنَthey carry اُسدَlions الزَّأرَةِof the thicket البَواسِلاthe fierce
مُدَّرِعينَclad in armor للوَغاfor battle سَرابِلاcoats of mail
Bearing the fierce lions of the thicket,
Clad for battle in coats of mail,
بِيضاًwhite تَخالُهاyou would take them for اَضاًpools مَضاحِلاshallow
يَومَon a day رِياحof winds عَصَفَتthat blew fiercely شَمائِلاnortherlies
White, you would take them for shallow pools
On a day when northerly winds blew fiercely,
مُستَشعِرِينَwearing next to the skin تَحتَهاbeneath them الغَلائِلاthe tunics
وَجَرَّدُواand they unsheathed الهِندِيَّةَthe Indian المَناصِلاblades
Wearing tunics next to the skin beneath them.
And they unsheathed their Indian blades,
ضَرباًblows طِلَخفاًcrushing فِىupon الطُّلاthe necks خُرادِلاcutting to pieces
تَسمَعُyou hear فِىagainst البَيضِthe helmets لَهُfrom it صَلاصِلاclanging sounds
Striking crushing blows that hacked necks into pieces.
You hear their clanging against the helmets.
فَتَرَكُواso they left عالِيَهُمtheir upper parts اَسافِلاdown below
وَغادَرُوهُمand they left them فِرَقاًin bands هَذالِلاsmall and scattered
So they left their upper parts cast down,
And left them in scattered little bands:
مُلَحَّباًhacked apart وَهارِباًand fleeing مُوائِلاseeking refuge
لاnot يَأتَلِىhe slackens قَدalready نَفَشَhe fluffed up البَرائِلاthe hackles
One hacked apart, another fleeing for refuge,
Sparing no effort, his hackles bristling,
قَدرَby the measure of النَّجِيثِa faint breath اَفلَتَhe escaped الحَبائِلاthe snares
By a mere breath he escaped the snares.
