And the heart of a trackless waste in the lands of Iṣmit,

hemmed in by hard, rugged ground and a tract of sand,

and one sandy stretch joined to another,

each swift, easy-gaited she-camel traversed it:

    broad-flanked, towering, sturdy,

long-striding over the open plain stripped bare.

She measures the breadth of barren waste after barren waste,

striding across it toward a marked-out watering place,

swift-flowing, gliding as a snake glides.

Were it not for the breast-straps and the girth's tight grip

against her chest, and the threefold braided strap

on the saddle, she would slip free of her breast-harness,

with a viper's tail-wriggling as it turns away,

shaking the fringes of the saddlecloth and coverings.

And every massive-boned, solidly built camel,

his ribcage bulging, lean of flesh,

    huge-mouthed, with a wide-gaping maw,

beating back the charge of a loud, unruly one,

seasoned by toil, already compact as rock [wording uncertain],

retaining his strength despite night travel and fatigue.
