And that an all-enveloping rain might cover them.
And they wish them alive, agreeing,
Yet at Hajar it was indeed seen by the man led astray
But he has seen, with his abandonment, the saddened one,
عَنِaway from الهُدَىguidance اَبُوAbu (father of) فُدَيكٍFudayk فُسَقُthe sinner
وصَحبُهُand his companions اِذwhen اَرعَدُواthey thundered وَاَبرَقُواand they flashed lightning
From guidance—Abu Fudayk, the sinner—
Abu Fudayk has deviated from guidance, and his companions,
And his companions, when they thundered and flashed
When they thundered and flashed,
وَشَفتَرُواand they corrupted فيin دِينِهِمtheir religion ومَرَقُواand they broke away
فَصَبَّحَتهُمthen it assailed them at dawn ذاتَpossessing رِزٍّa rumble فَيلَقُa host
And corrupted their religion and broke away:
And they were frivolous in their religion and defected.
Then a rumbling host assailed them at dawn,
So the morning found them in a plain of calamity,
مَلمُومَةclosely massed يَضِلُّgets lost فِيهاwithin it الاَبلَقُthe piebald horse

Closely massed: a piebald horse would be lost within it.
Blameworthy, in which the ignorant would stray,
With horses it advances straight ahead and overtakes.
With horses marching on and catching up.

Nothing of them is seen except their eyes.
Nothing of them can be seen but the eye sockets,
Squadrons follow one another, shields upon them,
Like armored vehicles over which the coats of mail flow,
وَاُسدُand lions غابٍof the forest فَوقَهُنَّover them الخَلَقُworn garments

And lions of the forest, worn garments over them.
And lions in ambush above them, the most sublime,
And helmets flash above their heads,
And the Turks above the heads gleaming,
كَالهُندُlike an Indian- وانِىِّ-made blade (word continuation) عَلاهُcovered it الرَّونَقُlustre

Like an Indian blade overlaid with lustre.
Like Indians, elevated in prestige,
Glints and watered-steel patterns appear upon them.
Rising over them is a glitter and clinking of swords,
وَالبِيضُand the bright swords فىin اَيمانِهِمtheir right hands تَأَلَّقُglitter

And bright swords glitter in their right hands,
And the white in their right hands shining,
And slender spears bear keenly sharpened points.
And withered among them a dejected elderly,

Silken cloth flies above their heads,
Flying above their heads are the thieves,
And gleaming banners flutter above them.
And the shiny ones above them fluttering,

And below them a resistant advancing,
And above them, dust-clouds and flying dust.
And above it large bodies and neighing,

The crush of battle stirs it up from beneath them.
Stirred from beneath them is the narrow pass,
Sweat streams from them as they gallop.
Seething from it in the bowels is sweat,

Ceaselessly, miscarried foals slip from them;
So no weak fetus escapes from it,
They leave each amid the swirling dust, gasping.
They leave him in the middle of the mill stones panting,
يَفُوقُhiccups مَرّاتٍat times وَمَرّاًand sometimes يَمأَقُsobs

It hiccups at times, and at times sobs.
Transcending times and times rushing,
They leave the broad earth narrow.
Leaving the expanse of the earth while it is narrow,

The smooth, wide-open plain grows cramped with them:
Perplexing thereby the smooth-stoned courtyard,
Every swift, long-legged steed, lean of flesh,
Each a pile whose flesh is ripped,
نَهدُfull and well-developed القُصَيرَيthe lowest rib هَيكَلٌlarge-framed شَمقمَقُtowering

Full at the short rib, large-framed and towering,
The breast of the short one is a body, humpbacked,
With a back and a long, lofty neck.
It has horns and a twisted neck.
