أَعْقَبْتَyou followed وَصْلاًunion بِصَدِّwith rejection
أَعْقَبْتَ وَصْلاً بِصَدِّ
When you became certain of my love,
When you fulfilled my affection
you followed union with rejection.
You followed it with estrangement
ياO أَصْفَقَmost brazen النَّاسِpeople وجهاًin countenance
يا أَصْفَقَ النَّاسِ وجهاً
ياO ناقِضاًbreaker of كلَّevery عَهْدِpledge
يا ناقِضاً كلَّ عَهْدِ
O most brazen-faced of people,
O two-faced person
O breaker of every pledge,
O violator of every promise
لاdo not تَنْسَforget لَيْلَةَthe night كُنَّاwe were
لا تَنْسَ لَيْلَةَ كُنَّا
فيin الضَّمِّthe embrace رُوحاًa soul لِفَرْدِfor a single being
في الضَّمِّ رُوحاً لِفَرْدِ
do not forget the night we were

وماand no عَلَيناover us رَقيبٌwatcher

With no watchman observing us
to replace nearness with distance,
Except stars that illuminated
إِلاexcept نُجومٌstars أَنارَتْshone
إِلا نُجومٌ أَنارَتْ
كالدُّرِّlike pearls فيin لازَوَرْدِlapis lazuli
كالدُّرِّ في لازَوَرْدِ
save stars that shone
Like pearls on azure cloth
like pearls in lapis lazuli.
