To the madness of love I gave my heart.

So leave me, my two reprovers—leave me.

You two, give me water-slain wine in the cup,

and refrain from drinking what you pour.

    Indeed, yesterday I became safe—when I died

through it—from dying a second death.

A wine that drives away cares whenever

it is given power over sorrow's dwelling places.

The palm of mixing scattered over it

eyes that turn within no eyelids.

So, in its subtlety, it courses through souls

    as spirits course through bodies.

And one of gentle coquetry, proud in beauty,

a marvel in whom meanings lose their way.

With his cup, among his gifts, there glide

toward us rare treasures of sorrow.

We have seen no rose like the rose upon his cheeks,

that appeared, rising on a bān-tree branch.

He visited me, the crescent on the horizon's forearm,

like a sea with half a serpent in its midst.

And he left at dawn, the crescent in dawn's snare,

    my companion in captivity's grip.

And Orion's right hand stretches an armspan

to embrace the darkness without fingertips.

And the Crown, within night's canopy, seems

three stars above a necklace of eight.

And the Arm beneath the Pleiades seems

a banner mounted without a spearhead.

And Mars, when hurled into the west, seems

    a flame from the fires.

And the stars seem the eyes of Romans,

set in the eye sockets of Black people.

    A fawn—souls crave what

lies between his front teeth: his tongue's nectar.

    فَوِصالِي لَهُ عَلى هِجْرَانِ

    I shunned him, despite the longing in me for him;

so my union with him rests on estrangement.

No—by the red rose-bloom of his cheeks,

and by the yellow suns of the wine jars,

may I never obey the reprover concerning the cup's delight,

nor ever blame a lover through all time.

I shall prolong my prostration toward the cup's qibla,

with the praise chanted by the tongues of lutes.

How many a prayer over a youth who died drunk

has been offered among us without a call to prayer!

O departing one, whose two palms

are dyed with the dye of cups,

turn to the laughter of goblets amid the tumult of revelry,

whenever the bottles weep over it.

And give me the wine that makes roses sprout,

if you wish, in the cheeks of beauties.

Do not tickle wine's breast with the hands of

mixing, so long as the breasts of lute strings are tickled,

in gardens that show you by night, from their midst,

    lamps of anemones.

The hands of clouds inscribed them with pens

of tears upon the parchments of the dwelling places:

    alifs arranged together, and lams

formed from the inward essence of meanings.
