الْدَّيْلَمُthe Daylamites الْدَّيْلَمُthe Daylamites آفاتيmy afflictions وماand not
يَقْوىcan prevail عَلىover الدَّيْلَمِthe Daylamites إِلاexcept مَنْwhoever صَبَرْendured
The Daylamites, the Daylamites—my afflictions! And none
The craze, the craze, my misfortunes and what
can withstand the Daylamites except one who endures.
None can withstand craze but he who is patient
كُنَّاwe were نَخَافُwe fear القَتْلَbeing killed مِنْfrom أَسْيافِهِمْtheir swords
فاليَوْمَbut today ماnot نُقْتَلُwe are killed إِلاexcept بِالنَّظَرْby gazing
We used to fear death by their swords;
We used to fear death from their swords
but today we are slain by gazing alone.
But today we die only from a glance
واoh! حَرَبيmy woe مِنْهُfrom him وقَدْand indeed أَقْبَلَhe approached فيin
شاشتِهِhis headdress السَّمُّورsable فيon يومِday المَطَرْthe rain
Woe is me because of him, now that he has come in
Oh my wars with him while he came in
his sable headdress on a rainy day!
His radiant happiness on a rainy day
كأَنَّهاas though it والحبُّand the beloved فيهاwithin it جالِسٌseated
قِطْعَةُa piece غَيْمٍof cloud قَدْindeed أَحاطَتْencircled بِقَمَرْaround a moon
It is as though, with the beloved seated within it,
As if it and love in it sitting
it were a patch of cloud that had encircled a moon.
A piece of cloud that has encircled the moon
