الكَأْسُthe cup قطبُthe pivot of السرورjoy والطربِand rapture
فاحظَso take pleasure بهاin it قبلbefore حاجِزِthe barrier of النوَبِmisfortunes
The cup is the pivot of joy and rapture.
The cup is the pole of joy and rapture
So enjoy it before misfortunes bar the way.
So seize it before the barrier of distress
أماdo you not تَرىsee الليلَthe night كيفhow تكشفُهthey dispel it
راياتُbanners of صُبحٍdawn مبيضَّةwhite العذبِthe fringes
Do you not see how the night is dispelled
Do you not see how the night is unveiled
by dawn’s banners, their fringes white,
By the banners of a morn sweet and pure
كَرَاهبٍlike a monk حَنَّyearned لِلهَوىfor love طرباًin rapture
فَشَقَّso he tore جِلبابَهُhis robe مِنَfrom الطَّرَبِecstasy
like a monk who yearned for love in rapture
Like a monk who for passion's delight
and so tore his robe in ecstasy?
Did rend his habit in ecstasy's throb
