قُمْrise فَاجْلُthen dispel هَمِّيmy grief ياO غُلامُlad
بِالرَّاحِwith wine إِذْwhen ضَحِكَlaughed الظَّلامُthe darkness
Rise, then dispel my grief, O lad,
Rise, my lad, and take away my cares
with wine, now that the darkness has laughed.
As the darkness smiles and dusk appears,
وَجَلاand unveiled الثُّرَيَّاthe Pleiades فيin مُلاmantle (first part of a split word)
ءةِcompletion of 'mantle' نُورِهِits light البَدْرُthe full moon التَّمامُat its full
And the Pleiades were unveiled in a mantle
And the Pleiades shine fully dressed
of its light by the moon at its full.
In the perfect moon's luminous vest.
فَكَأَنَّهاso it is as though she كَأسٌa cup يُديpasses round (first part of a split word)
رُcompletion of 'passes round' بِهاwith it الدُّجىthe darkness وَالبَدْرُand the full moon جَامُa goblet
So it is as though she were a cup that
As if it were a cup the gloom passed round,
the darkness passes round, and the full moon a goblet.
The moon and stars the wine that crowned.
وَكأنَّand as though زُرْقَthe blue ones نُجُومِهاher stars
And as though her blue stars were
As if the blue of all those sparkling eyes
wide-open eyes, asleep.
Were slumbering lids that wake and rise.
وَأَظُنُّهاand I think she مِنْfrom صِحَّةٍgood health
مَرِضَتْshe fell ill وَلَيْسَand there is no بِهاin her سَقَامُsickness
And I think that, from good health,
And though they seem a noble company,
she has fallen ill, though no sickness afflicts her.
Sick with yearning for what none can see,
فَكأَنَّهاso it is as though she وَكأَنَّهُand as though he
إِذْwhen حَانَwas due بَيْنَهُماbetween them انْصِرامُparting
So it is as though she and he were,
The moon and Pleiades I thought I knew
when the time came for them to part,
Until the distance made them two,
وَهَوَتْand she sank لِتغْرِبَto set فَانْثَنىthen turned
عَنْهاaway from her بِمَغْرِبِهاat her setting ابْتِسامُa smile
and she sank to set, and then a smile turned
And she drooped westward, while, still bright,
away from her at her setting,
His smile pursued her into night.
خَوْدٌa fair maiden هَوىfell مِنْfrom أُذْنِهاher ear
قُرْطٌan earring فَقَبَّلَهُthen he kissed it غُلامُa lad
a fair maiden from whose ear there fell
An earring slipped from her ear and fell -
an earring, and a lad who then kissed it.
A slave picked it up, kissed it, fare thee well!
وَالفَجْرُand dawn فيin غَسَقِdeep gloom الدُّجىthe night's darkness
كالمَاءِlike water خَالَطَهُmingled with it المُدامُwine
And dawn, in the deep gloom of night,
And dawn amid the gloom like wine mixed water
is like water mingled with wine.
Showed night still sipped, though fled dawn's daughter.
