قُمْrise ياO غُلامُboy إِلىto الشَّمولِthe wine فَهاتِهاthen bring it
قَبْلَbefore انْتِشارِthe spreading of الصُّبْحِdawn فيin الآفاقِthe horizons
Rise, O boy, go to the wine and bring it,
Rise, my lad, to her fragrance, and bring it here
before dawn spreads across the horizons.
Before the dawn spreads across the horizons,
فَكأَنَّهاfor it is like شَمْسٌa sun تُنِيرُyou illuminate بِهاwith it الدُّجىthe darkness
وكأَنَّهُand he is like قَمَرٌa moon تَحَوَّلَhas become ساقِa cupbearer
For it is like a sun with which you light the darkness,
It's as if it were a sun, lighting up the gloom,
and he is like a moon that has become a cupbearer.
Or moonbeams changed into a leg.
لَوْif كانَwere رِزْقيmy sustenance مِنْfrom لَذيذِthe sweetness of عِناقِهِhis embrace
مَاnot كُنْتُI would أَحْسُدُكُمْenvy you (plural) عَلىfor الأَرْزاقِthe livelihoods
If my sustenance came from the sweetness of his embrace,
If my sustenance were from the sweetness of her embrace
I would not envy you your livelihoods.
I wouldn't envy you your livelihood.
