رُبَّmany a نُجُومٍstars فيin زَمانٍa season أَوْرَقِleafed out
راعَيْتُهاI watched them فيin مَغْرِبٍa west ومَشْرِقِand an east
Many a star in a season of new leaves
I watched in the west and the east.
كأَنَّهاas though they مِنْfrom خَجَلٍshyness لَمْdid not تُطْرِقِlower their gaze
أَوْor نَرْجِسٍnarcissi فيin رَوْضَةٍa garden مُفَرَّقِscattered
As though, from shyness, they did not lower their gaze,
Or were narcissi scattered through a garden.
والقُطْبُand the Pole Star حِينَwhen يَعْتَليit rises وَيَرْتَقيand climbs
إِذاthen الثُّرَيَّاthe Pleiades سَرْوَةٌa cypress لَمْdid not تُورِقِleaf out
And the Pole Star, as it rises and climbs—
Then the Pleiades are a cypress that has not leafed out,
وَنُكِّسَتْand it was tipped downward لِلْغَرْبِtoward the west فيin تَفَرُّقdispersal
كَأَنَّهاas though it عُودٌa bough بِغَيْرِwithout بُخْنُقِa head veil
Tipped toward the west as they scatter,
As though they were a bough without a head veil.
