حَقِيقٌfitting لِعَيْنَيَّfor my two eyes أَنْto تَدْمَعاboth weep
لِحَرِّfor the burning heat of الفِراقِparting وأَنْand to تَجْزَعاboth be distraught
It is fitting that my eyes should weep
My eyes must shed tears
For the burning heat of parting, and be distraught.
out of grief for separation and cry in pain,
وَأَلْطِمُand I slap خَدَّيَّmy two cheeks حُزْناًin grief عَلَيْهِfor him
وأَبْكيand I weep عَلىfor الإِلْفِthe beloved إِذْwhen وَدَّعاhe bade farewell
And I slap my cheeks in grief for him,
and I must strike my cheeks in sorrow for him
And weep for the beloved when he bade farewell.
and weep for intimacy now departed.
رَمَانيshot me الزَّمانُtime بِسَهْمِwith the arrow of الفِراقِparting
فَشَتَّتَso it scattered شَمْليmy union وَلَمْand did not يَجْمَعاreunite it
Time shot me with the arrow of parting;
Time's arrow struck me with the pain of parting,
So it scattered my union and did not reunite it.
scattering my gathered self, never to reunite.
