مَنْwhoever سَرَّهُgladdened him العِيدُEid فَلاbut not سَرَّنيgladdened me
مَنْ سَرَّهُ العِيدُ فَلا سَرَّني
بَلْrather زَادَincreased فِيin شَوْقيmy longing وَأَحْزَانيand my sorrows
بَلْ زَادَ فِي شَوْقي وَأَحْزَاني
If Eid has gladdened anyone, it has not gladdened me.
The festival gladdens others, not me
Rather, it has added to my longing and my sorrows,
It but increases my longing and sorrows
لِأَنَّهُbecause it ذَكَّرَنيreminded me مَاwhat مَضىhas gone by
لِأَنَّهُ ذَكَّرَني مَا مَضى
مِنْfrom عَهْدِthe days of أَحْبَابيmy loved ones وَإِخْوَانِيand my brothers
مِنْ عَهْدِ أَحْبَابي وَإِخْوَانِي
For it reminded me of what has gone by
For it reminds me of days gone by
From the days with my loved ones and my brothers.
Of my friends and brothers of yore
