لَوْif مَرَّpassed ليof mine نَفَسٌa breath بالنَّارِby the fire أَحْرَقَهاit would burn it
بِحَرِّهِwith its heat ولوand even if أَنَّthat النَّارَthe fire مِنْfrom بَعَدِa distance
If a breath of mine passed by fire, it would burn it
Had I but breathed in fire's heart, by passion burned,
with its heat, even if the fire were far away.
Fire at its hottest, still my heart had yearned.
وَلَوْand if هَوِيتُI desired حِماميmy death فيهِfor his sake فارقنيit would forsake me
منfrom قبلِbefore فُرقتِهِits separating روحيmy soul منfrom الجَسَدِthe body
And if I desired my death for his sake, it would forsake me
Had I but cast my soul into the glowing flame,
before separating my soul from the body.
Beyond all point of flame had been my aim.
وماand not أُطيقُI am able لماbecause of what أَلقاهُI suffer it مِنْof كَمَدٍgrief
أَقُولُI say واكَبِديalas, my liver! مِنْfrom شِدَّةِintensity الكَمَدِthe grief
And, because of the grief I suffer, I cannot
But I can bear no more; say only this:
cry, 'Alas, my liver!'—so intense is the grief.
My heart is breaking under love's sweet pain.
