عَذَّبْتُهاI tormented her بالمِزاجِwith dilution فابتَسمتْand she smiled
عَذَّبْتُها بالمِزاجِ فابتَسمتْ
عَنْrevealing بَرَدٍhailstones نَابتٍsprouting عَلَىupon لَهَبِa flame
عَنْ بَرَدٍ نَابتٍ عَلَى لَهَبِ
I tormented her with dilution, and she smiled
I tortured her with my mood, yet she smiled
revealing hailstones sprouting upon a flame,
As though frost bloomed on fire’s flame
كأَنّas though أَيديhands المِزاجِdilution قَدhad سكبتpoured
كأَنّ أَيدي المِزاجِ قَد سكبت
فيinto كأْسهاher cup فضةًsilver عَلَىupon ذَهَبِgold
في كأْسها فضةً عَلَى ذَهَبِ
as though the hands of dilution had poured
As if the hands of my mood had poured
silver upon gold into her cup.
Silver into her cup over gold
