أَغارُI am jealous عَلَيْكَover you مِنْof نَظَريmy gaze وَإِنِّيand indeed I
لأَخْشىI indeed fear ناظِرَيْكَyour two eyes عَلَيْكَfor you مِنْكاfrom you yourself
I am jealous over you, even of my own gaze, and indeed
I'm jealous of my own gaze upon you, though
I fear for you even your own two eyes.
I fear others looking upon you more than I.
لَقَدْindeed نَطَقَتْspoke مَحاسِنُهُhis charms بِعُذريin my defense
فَأَخْرَسَand so silenced عَاذِليmy reproacher بِالعَذْلِwith reproach عَنْكاconcerning you
His charms have indeed spoken in my defense,
Your beauty has spoken in my defense,
And silenced my reproacher from blaming me over you.
So those blaming me are silenced by this plea.
أَمُوتُI die مِنَof الصَّبابَةِardent longing ثُمَّthen أَحْيَاI live
كَذاكَsuch is الحُبُّlove أَضْحَكَنِيmade me laugh وَأَبْكىand made me weep
I die of longing, then come back to life;
I die of passion, then I live again -
Such is love: it made me laugh and weep.
Such is love, making me laugh and cry.
