كَمْhow many زفراتٍsighs وكمand how many دُمُوعtears
هذاthis لَعَمريby my life هُوَit القُطُوعُestrangement
How many sighs, and how many tears!
How many sighs and how many tears
This, by my life, is estrangement.
This, by my life, is true misery
لَوْif أَعْشَبَsprouted grass الخَدُّthe cheek مِنْfrom دُمُوعٍtears
لَكانَwould be فيin خَدِّيَmy cheek الرَّبيعُspring
If the cheek sprouted grass from tears,
If my cheek sprouted from tears
Spring would be upon my cheek.
Spring would be in my cheek
ياO قَمَراًmoon غَابَvanished عَنْfrom عِيانيmy sight
بِاللَهِby God قُلْtell ليto me مَتىwhen الطُّلوعُthe rising
O moon that vanished from my sight,
O moon that disappeared from my eyes
By God, tell me: when will you rise?
For God's sake, tell me when is sunrise
بِنْتَyou departed فَماyet not بِنْتَyou departed عَنْfrom فُؤاديmy heart
فَبَانَso departed مِنْbecause of بَيْنِكَyour departure الهُجُوعُsleep
You departed, yet did not depart from my heart;
You left, yet you didn't leave my heart
So sleep departed because of your departure.
Parting between us became evident
