لِحاظُهُhis glances تَجْلِبُbring الحُتُوفاdeaths
لِحاظُهُ تَجْلِبُ الحُتُوفا
وَطَرْفُهُand his gaze لَمْnot يَزَلْcease to be ضَعِيفاlanguid
وَطَرْفُهُ لَمْ يَزَلْ ضَعِيفا
His glances bring death,
His gaze attracts the gazelles
yet his gaze has always been languid.
And his eyelash has always been delicate
لَمْnot يَبْدُappear لِلْبَدْرِbefore the full moon قَطُّever إِلاexcept
لَمْ يَبْدُ لِلْبَدْرِ قَطُّ إِلا
أَخْجَلَهُhe shamed it فَاكْتَسىso it clothed itself كُسُوفاeclipse
أَخْجَلَهُ فَاكْتَسى كُسُوفا
He never appeared before the full moon without
The full moon has never appeared
shaming it, so it clothed itself in eclipse.
Except it is shy of him and dons veils
مَلَّكَهُgave him mastery over حُبُّهُlove for him قِيادِيmy reins
مَلَّكَهُ حُبُّهُ قِيادِي
فَصَارَso he became فيin مُلْكِهِhis rule عَنِيفاharsh
فَصَارَ في مُلْكِهِ عَنِيفا
My love for him gave him control of my reins,
His love has empowered me
so he grew harsh in his rule.
So I became forceful in his kingdom
أَصْبَحْتُI have become فيin حُبِّهِlove for him إِماماًan imam
أَصْبَحْتُ في حُبِّهِ إِماماً
وَالنَّاسُand the people خَلْفيbehind me غَدَواthey became صُفوفاrows
وَالنَّاسُ خَلْفي غَدَوا صُفوفا
I have become an imam in loving him,
I have become a leader in his love
and the people have formed rows behind me.
And people behind me are rows
