بَاحَspoke openly بِماof what قَدْhad كَتَماconcealed
لَمَّاwhen جَرىflowed الدَّمْعُthe tears دَمَاas blood
He disclosed what he had concealed
He confessed what he had concealed
when tears flowed as blood.
When tears flowed like blood
رَمَاهُshot him رِيمٌa gazelle فَأَصَاand struck (continued)
بَ(completes 'struck') القَلْبَthe heart مِنْهُof him إِذْwhen رَمَىshot
A gazelle shot him and struck
He was shot by an archer and wounded
his heart when he shot.
In the heart when the arrow struck
وَاحْتَجَّand argued in defense فيconcerning قَتْلَتِهِhis slaying
بِأَنَّهُon the grounds that he مَاnot عَلِمَاknew
And he argued, in defense of killing him,
And he pleaded for his murder
that he had not known.
That he did not know
ياO مَعْشَرَcompany of النَّاسِthe people أَمَاwill ... not?
يُنْصِفُنيdo me justice مَنْthe one who ظَلَمَاwronged
O company of people, will not
O people, is there no one
he who wronged me do me justice?
Who will do me justice against my oppressor?
عَلَّمَtaught سُقْمُlanguor طَرْفِهِhis gaze
جِسْمِيَmy body مِنْهُfrom it سَقَمَاsickness
The languor of his gaze taught
The sickness of his glance
my body sickness from it.
Infected my body with illness
فَسُقْمُso the sickness جِسْمِيmy body فيin الهَوىlove
مِنْfrom طَرْفِهِhis gaze تَعَلَّمَاlearned
So my body's sickness in love
So the sickness of my body in love
took its lesson from his gaze.
Was taught by his glance
لَوْif قِيلَit were said لِيto me ماwhat تَشْتَهِيyou desire
مُخَيَّراًgiven a choice مُحَكَّماempowered to decide
If I were asked, 'What do you desire?'
If I were told, "What do you desire
given free choice and the final say,
Given full choice and authority?"
لَقُلْتُthen I would say أَنْthat أَلْثِمَهُI kiss him
نَحْراًneck وَخَدّاًand cheek وَفَمَاand mouth
I would say, 'To kiss him
I would say, "To kiss him
on neck and cheek and mouth.'
On the throat, cheek, and mouth."
قَالواthey said لَهُto him بِأَنَّهُthat he
فِيin هَجْرِهِhis shunning قَدْhad أَثِمَاsinned
They told him that he
They said to him, "You have sinned
had sinned by shunning me.
In your estrangement and remoteness."
حَلَّلَmade lawful فيin هِجْرانِهِhis abandonment
لِيfor me فيin الهَوىlove ماwhat حُرِّمَاwas forbidden
In shunning me, he made lawful
He made lawful in his estrangement
for me in love what was forbidden.
What is forbidden in love
كَمْmany a عَاشِقٍlover قَابَلَهُmet him
يَبْكِيweeping عَلَيْهِover him نَدَمَاin regret
Many a lover has met him,
How many lovers has he encountered
weeping over him in regret.
Who weep in regret over him?
