دُونَbefore المُنىwishes فيin الهَوىlove ياO نَفْسsoul آفاتُperils
كَأْسُcup الهَوىlove حُلْوَةٌsweet فيهاin it مَراراتُbitter tastes
Perils stand in the way of wishes in love, O soul.
The cup of love is sweet, yet holds bitterness.
إِنَّindeed المُحِبّينَthe lovers إِنْif أَخْفَواthey conceal مُحاذَرَةًout of caution
هَواهُمُtheir love فَلَهُمْthen they have فيهِin it عَلاماتُsigns
Indeed, if lovers conceal, out of caution,
Their love, they bear signs of it.
لاmay not آخَذَhold to account اللَهُGod مَنْthe one whom قَلْبيmy heart بِهِof him كَلِفٌenamored
صَبٌّlove-stricken قَدِindeed اسْتَحكَمَتْhave taken firm hold فيهِin it الصَّباباتُardent longings
May God not hold to account the one my heart is enamored of—
A lovesick heart in which yearnings have taken firm hold.
لِكُلِّfor every شَيْءٍthing نِهاياتٌendings تَبيدُperish وَماbut not
لِلَوْعَةِfor the burning anguish الحُبِّlove فيin قَلْبيmy heart نِهاياتُendings
All things have endings and pass away, but
The burning anguish of love in my heart has no end.
