قوامُstature غصنٍa bough كأنَّهas though it were أَلِفٌthe letter alif
قوامُ غصنٍ كأنَّه أَلِفٌ
تُهديshe offers لناto us منfrom رُضابهاher saliva لَهباflame
تُهدي لنا من رُضابها لَهبا
A bough's form, as though it were the letter alif;
she offers us flame from her saliva.
باطِنُهاher inside مُكْتَسٍclothed وظاهرُهاand her outside
باطِنُها مُكْتَسٍ وظاهرُها
لِلعينِto the eye يُبديreveals مستَنْزَهاًa pleasure-ground عَجباwondrous
لِلعينِ يُبدي مستَنْزَهاً عَجبا
Her inside is clothed, while her outside
reveals to the eye a wondrous pleasure-ground.
قَدalready يَئِسَتْshe has despaired منْof بقائِهاher survival فترىso you see
قَد يَئِسَتْ منْ بقائِها فترى
أَدمعَهاher tears طولَthroughout ليلهاher night سَكباpouring down
أَدمعَها طولَ ليلها سَكبا
She has lost hope of surviving, so you see
her tears pouring down all through her night.
تُكابدshe struggles through الليلَthe night وهيwhile she is جاهِلَةٌunaware
تُكابد الليلَ وهي جاهِلَةٌ
وعمرُهاand her life فيin الكِبادِthe struggle قدْalready ذَهَباhas gone
وعمرُها في الكِبادِ قدْ ذَهَبا
She struggles through the night, unaware,
and her life has already been spent in the struggle.
