It is life itself: were it to reach a stone,

it would awaken within it, from itself, the rapture of delight.

As the tongue of water strikes it, it is like

tears shimmering in the eyelids of one who sobs.

When foam rises upon it, you would think it a mesh

of silver upon a ground of gold.

Its intoxicating force took shape from the cup’s surface,

and made hailstones sprout from it upon a flame.

When it is mixed, you fancy it forms around the cup’s neck

a necklace of pearls, or a collar of bubbles.
