Whose are the traces at Ramatayn, now worn away?

Their landmarks were clothed in love, though they lay bare.

Ruined dwellings, weaned from youth, whose

love-stirred movements have turned to stillness.

There I awakened every slumbering longing,

with sleeplessness's hand, though I sought no helper.

The camels of separation ran through them, bearing heartache,

so among the rugged hills you would take them for hills.

If I could tell a reproacher from one who pardons,

I would not be captive among those they set free.

May none of my tears upon her ruins be wasted—

those that brought us no solace in her courtyard.

Ah, for the days of the pampered maidens,

when we undid separation and tied bonds of tenderness.

    فَلَو أَنَّ أَيّاماً بَقينَ بَقِينا

    The stars of my voice set with their setting;

had those days endured, we too would have endured.

They smoothed longing's rough ground along love's paths,

and gave freely of consolation's guarded wealth.

Ruined dwellings, where separation seems to take

with its right hand an oath from me against myself.

They wrote letters with the pens of grief,

read by the mouths of eyelids, though hidden.

As though I, with my heart's beloved, were chanting:

'O Khawla's dwelling, release us from your love!'

By God, were I made to forget, in sleep's drowsiness,

my longing for you, I would not sleep for years.

And many a shedder of tears, his heart asleep

to what he reveals of secrets buried within—

the certainty of patience between his ribs became

doubt, and the one gladdened by tears grew sad.

Until his heart peered out from his breast

in anguish, revealing its hidden secret.

The hands of decay toyed with him in a playground

where, had we died, we would have come alive.

Love clung in him to a pillar of fidelity,

ever steadfast amid the urge to forget.

Time assailed him with its calamities,

as though it held debts against him.

Our tears are spent, yet we do not perish with them,

as though they resented whatever would please us.

They trace the ruins; you seem to see in

their hues a coloring drawn from our own suffering.

At last they pledged to Ahmad, perforce,

that he would always be a helper against calamities.

A sanctuary for those seeking bounty; even if

his hands received no petitions, we would still be visited.

Generosity took such firm root in him that

his qualities left no room for any mere show of generosity.

Expectations of him have put forth leaves and borne fruit:

a bounty in which doubt itself remains certainty.

His gifts sought the wishes of those who sought them,

then stood, footsore from having stood so long.

He quivers at giving like an Indian blade

whose edges wore through scabbards at dawn.

Toward him are turned the reins of fear, which

    makes safety's thoroughbred seem baseborn.

He sought swords in marriage from the deadly fates, and was not

sparing of their dowries out of concern for survival.

Likewise the spear-points, through his thrusting,

left branches for the foliage of rocks.

Like the sun in beauty, and the keen sword in hardness,

and rain clouds in bounty, and the arak tree in suppleness.

O you who sicken your wealth's health through giving

to us, and destroy it with what builds us up.

In battle's darkness you lit for the sons of foes

lamps with your hand, thrust into throats.

Through the glory of combat you rose to a station

that made the Pleiades lie hidden in its dust.

May your valor never spend a night beneath battle's snares,

ever sorrowful at the grief of calamities.

For me you ripened wealth's leaves upon my nabʿ tree,

and drove doubts away from me with certainty.

Indeed, my aspirations mounted the backs of my resolves,

and through you I became a peer of al-Jawza.

You clothed me, while noble deeds say to me:

'Take pride: since you were clothed, we too were clothed.'

With every robe displaying its embroidery, as though it

describes noble deeds, however you wish—and blemish.

Had they been in a celestial sphere, they would have been stars,

or had they been in a face, they would have been eyes.

It is as though hopes branched out from you

within us; among us they seek none but you.

Remain safe, for as long as you are safe from death

and given the water of life to drink, we too are given drink.
