لَوْif أَنَّthat دَمْعِيmy tears نَظيرُthe equal of وَجْديmy anguish
لابْيَضَّwould turn white مِنْهُfrom it سَوادُthe blackness of عَيْنِيmy eye
If my tears were equal to my anguish,
the black of my eye would turn white from them.
أَعَادَrestored لَيْلِيmy night عَلَيَّupon me فِيهاin it
لَيْلَa night of صُدُودٍrejection وَلَيْلَand a night of بَيْنِparting
My night was restored to me within it
by a night of rejection and a night of parting.
هَجْرُكَyour forsaking لِيof me شاهِدٌa witness بِأَنِّيto the fact that I
أَحِنُّI yearn لَيْليthrough my night بِغَيْرِwithout أَيْنِweariness
Your forsaking me bears witness that I
yearn through my night without weariness.
كأنَّماas though الفَرْقَدانِthe two Farqad stars كَاناthey both were
علَىover الثُّرَيَّاthe Pleiades مُراقِبَيْنِboth keeping watch
As though the two Farqad stars were
keeping watch over the Pleiades,
كَأَنَّهاas though it were كَفُّa hand of لازَوَرْدٍlapis lazuli
بِهاupon it تَطارِيفُfingertip dye مِنْof لُجَيْنِsilver
as though it were a hand of lapis lazuli,
its fingertips dyed with silver.
