    بِالكَرْخِ مِنْ فَلَكِ الأَزْرَارِ مَطْلَعُهُ

    I entrust to God a moon of mine in Baghdad;

    In al-Karkh he rises from the sphere of buttons.

    I bade him farewell, though I wished to be bidden farewell

    By the spirit of life, and not to bid him farewell.

    And how often he clung to me on the morning of departure,

    While my tears poured down, and his tears too.

    And how often he pleaded that I should not leave him,

    But necessity is such that it will not grant his plea.
